Summary: The DM9-containing protein CgDM9CP-7 plays an important role in the innate immune response of molluscs. It is constitutively expressed in various tissues and is up-regulated in haemocytes after stimulation by Vibrio splendidus and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). CgDM9CP-7 binds to various pathogens and exhibits antimicrobial activity, while also regulating the expression of CgMyD88 and CgIL-17.

Molecular cloning and functional characterization of duck MRE11

Dietary LC-PUFA and environmental salinity modulate the fatty acid biosynthesis capacity of the euryhaline teleost thicklip grey mullet (Chelon labrosus)

Summary: This study investigated the combined effects of partial dietary replacement of fish oil (FO) by vegetable oil (VO) and reduced ambient salinity on the fatty acid composition of C. labrosus juveniles. The results showed that C. labrosus is able to biosynthesise EPA and DHA from ALA, and low salinity conditions can upregulate the gene expression related to fatty acid metabolism. Fish reared on FO20 diet showed the highest amount of n-3 LC-PUFA in muscle.

Cardiovascular physiology of embryonic neotropic cormorants (Phalacrocorax brasilianus)

Summary: This study focuses on cardiovascular development in altricial bird species, which has been less studied compared to precocial species. The researchers investigated the cholinergic and adrenergic receptor mediated control of arterial blood pressure and heart rate in the neotropic cormorant. The findings suggest that both cholinergic and adrenergic tone play a role in cardiovascular regulation in embryonic birds.

Links between reproduction and immunity in two sympatric wild marine fishes

Summary: According to life-history theory, there might be different immunological strategies between reproductive and non-reproductive periods due to limited resources. Our study on two sympatric marine fish species, rockfish and sandperch, found that reproductive individuals showed lower immune function, but higher levels of natural antibodies in rockfish females, compared to their non-reproductive counterparts. On the other hand, reproductively active sandperch males showed lower levels of natural antibodies and higher neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and spleen index compared to non-reproductive males. The study highlights the species-specific patterns of immunity and the potential influence of resource limitation and abiotic factors on immune trade-offs in fish.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms underlying the activation of lipophagy in yellow catfish under high glucose-induced lipid deposition. The SIRT1-NRF2-TFEB pathway is proposed to mediate lipophagy activation, and lipophagy helps alleviate high glucose-induced lipid deposition. This study provides insights into the control of lipophagy in response to metabolic stress.

Diel patterns of movement reveal temporal strategies during dispersal

Summary: Little is known about how animals overcome temporal constraints on movement during dispersal. This study used GPS tracking of vulturine guineafowl and found that dispersers showed the greatest increase in movement at the same times of day when they moved the most prior to dispersal. These findings suggest that individuals face the same ecological constraints during dispersal as they do in daily life and achieve large displacements by maximizing movement when conditions are most favorable.

Exploring the impact of heat stress on oocyte maturation and embryo development in dairy cattle using a culture medium supplemented with vitamins E, C, and coenzyme Q10

Summary: Heat stress affects the fertility of dairy cattle, but supplementing vitamins E and coenzyme Q10 can alleviate its adverse effects on oocyte maturation and embryo development. Vitamin E was found to be more effective than vitamin C and coenzyme Q10 in improving maturation and cleavage rates, as well as increasing the count of blastocyst cells.

Histopathological observations and comparative transcriptome analysis of Ophiocordyceps sinensis infection of Hepialus xiaojinensis in the early stage

Summary: This study provides the first report on the digestive tract pH of the pygmy octopus. The pH of the digestive tract regions was found to be lower than 7.0 and did not differ significantly between wild and captive octopuses. The digestive gland had the lowest pH values, but they were still above 5.0.

The results showed that the functions of G6pc and Gck in LMB were highly conserved in evolution, and the interconversion of glucose and G6P in the liver was well regulated at the transcript level under high starch diet, but a futile cycle was induced after a glucose load.

Unrevealing components of risk assessment: escape behaviour and refuge use in a web-building spider

African penguins utilize their ventral dot patterns for individual recognition

Workload inequality increases with group size in a cooperatively breeding bird
