Gaps in evidence on treatment of male osteoporosis: a Research Agenda

Adam J. Rose, Susan L. Greenspan, Guneet K. Jasuja

Summary: The objective of this study is to identify key research gaps regarding medication therapy for preventing osteoporotic fractures in men. Six research gaps have been identified, including the prevention of clinical fractures, rates of side effects and complications, the role of testosterone, comparative effectiveness of different therapeutic regimens, drug holidays for bisphosphonate and sequential therapies, and effectiveness of therapy for secondary prevention. Addressing these topics should be a key goal for future research on male osteoporosis.

Risk of multiple lower and upper urinary tract problems among male older adults with type-2 diabetes: a population-based study

Junaid Khan, Subhojit Shaw

Summary: This study explores the risk of diabetes-associated lower and upper urinary tract diseases among male older adults aged 45 and above in India. The prevalence of various urinary tract problems and diabetes among male older adults was estimated, and multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that diabetes is associated with chronic renal failure, incontinence, and kidney stones. The study emphasizes the need for further investigation and prevention of these urinary complications in male older adults with diabetes in India.

Liang Liu, Fu-zhen Sun, Pan-ying Zhang, Yu Xiao, Xiao Yue, Dong-Ming Wang, Qiang Wang

Summary: This article describes a rare case of primary urothelial carcinoma in the prostate (UCP) and reviews the literature. The case involves a 67-year-old widowed male with symptoms of frequent and urgent dysuria. After imaging and biopsy, the patient was diagnosed with prostatic high-grade urothelial carcinoma and underwent radical prostatectomy. Four months after surgery, further examinations revealed thickening of the bladder wall and the presence of malignant tumor.

The long-lasting effect of early life family structure on social position, well-being, and biological condition in adulthood

Anna Lipowicz, Monika Natalia Bugdol, Wioleta Umlawska, Andrzej Waldemar Mitas

Summary: This study aims to examine the long-term relationship between the type of family men were raised in and their adult social position, well-being, and biological conditions. The findings suggest that growing up in an incomplete family reduces chances for better education, decreases life satisfaction in adulthood, and negatively affects final height.

PFKFB3 downregulation aggravates Angiotensin II-induced podocyte detachment

Xiaoxiao Huang, Zhaowei Chen, Zilv Luo, Yiqun Hao, Jun Feng, Zijing Zhu, Xueyan Yang, Zongwei Zhang, Jijia Hu, Wei Liang, Guohua Ding

Summary: This study found that Ang II leads to glomerular podocyte detachment and impaired renal function. PFKFB3 plays a crucial role in this process. The PFKFB3 inhibitor 3PO further aggravates podocyte loss induced by Ang II, while the PFKFB3 agonist meclizine alleviates it. These findings suggest a potential therapeutic target for podocyte injury in chronic kidney disease by suppressing PFKFB3 expression and reducing podocyte adhesion.

Association between triglyceride-glucose index and AKI in ICU patients based on MIMICIV database: a cross-sectional study

Zihan Jin, Kai Zhang

Summary: This study aims to explore the relationship between the triglyceride glucose index (TyG) and the incidence of acute kidney injury in ICU patients. The study found an independent relationship between the TyG index and an increased risk of acute kidney injury. The results demonstrated a linear relationship between an increase in the TyG index and an increased risk of acute kidney injury.

Short-term use of ceftriaxone sodium leads to intestinal barrier disruption and ultrastructural changes of kidney in SD rats

Wenli Zou, Yueming Liu, Wei Zhang, Bo Lin, Wei Shen, Yiwen Li, Qiang He, Juan Jin

Summary: The study found that short-term use of ceftriaxone can lead to changes in the gut microbiota, disruption of the intestinal barrier, and ultrastructural changes in the kidneys of SD rats. Additionally, inhibiting the TLR4 signaling pathway can alleviate the damage to the intestinal barrier and kidneys.

The systemic inflammation indexes predict all-cause mortality in peritoneal dialysis patients

Yan Yang, Yuanyuan Xu, Shusu Liu, Peiyu Lu, Hua Zhou, Min Yang

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the predictive ability of aggregate index of systemic inflammation (AISI), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) for all-cause mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The study found that higher AISI, SII, and SIRI were significantly associated with all-cause mortality. These indexes could serve as independent predictors and assist clinicians in improving PD management.

Validation of the EKFC equation for glomerular filtration rate estimation and comparison with the Asian-modified CKD-EPI equation in Chinese chronic kidney disease patients in an external study

Li Zhao, Huan-li Li, Hui-jing Liu, Jin Ma, Wei Liu, Jian-min Huang, Ling-ge Wei, Peng Xie

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine whether the new European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) equation is more applicable than the Asian-modified CKD-EPI equation in estimating GFR in a clinical setting. The overall performance of the EKFC equation was found to be acceptable, with no clinically meaningful difference compared to the Asian-modified CKD-EPI equation within the limits of the small sample size.

Prevalence of and risk factors for chronic kidney disease in ten metropolitan areas of China: a cross-sectional study using three kidney damage markers

Tianxing Feng, Yaqing Xu, Jiali Zheng, Xiaoxiao Wang, Yisen Li, Yilei Wang, Beili Zhu, Li Zhao, Huiyan Zhao, Jiawei Yu

Summary: Using estimated glomerular filtration rate, urinary albumin creatinine ratio, and kidney ultrasound, this study estimated the prevalence of chronic kidney disease among the health check-up population in economically developed areas of China. The results showed a crude prevalence of 10.1% and identified various factors such as female gender, older age, and low city-tier associated with chronic kidney disease. Kidney ultrasound was found to be helpful in detecting CKD patients, providing a supplement to kidney function and urine protein.

Relationship between gut microbiota and vascular calcification in hemodialysis patients

Wen-Han Bao, Wen-Ling Yang, Chun-Yan Su, Xin-Hong Lu, Lian He, Ai-Hua Zhang

Summary: This study investigates the differences in gut microbiota between different vascular calcification (VC) groups in hemodialysis (HD) patients. It identifies that the presence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-producing Escherichia-Shigella bacteria is positively correlated with VC, while short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing Ruminococcus bacteria is negatively correlated with VC. These findings suggest new therapeutic targets and provide insights into the underlying mechanism of VC in HD patients.
