Lung transplantation in primary pulmonary arterial hypertension and pulmonary venous hypertension

Sandeep Sainathan, John Ryan, Leonardo Mullinari, Pablo Sanchez

Summary: Patients undergoing lung transplantation for pulmonary venous-occlusive disease (PVOD) had better initial survival compared to those with primary pulmonary hypertension (PPHTN), but this advantage disappeared after 1 year. The use of donation after circulatory death donors was associated with lower short-term survival rates.

A low thrombospondin-1 serum concentration is related to increased bacteremia risk in lymphoma patients treated with BeEAM/BEAM conditioning regimen and autologous stem cell transplantation

Kacper Koscielny, Damian Mikulski, Mateusz Nowicki, Krystyna Wyka, Malgorzata Misiewicz, Ewelina Perdas, Agnieszka Wierzbowska, Wojciech Fendler

Summary: This study examined the potential use of THBS-1 serum levels as a biomarker for predicting bacteremia in AHSCT recipients. The findings showed that patients with lower THBS-1 concentrations had a higher risk of bacteremia and experienced febrile neutropenia sooner.

Investigation of the role of von Willebrand factor in shear-induced platelet activation and functional alteration under high non-physiological shear stress

Dong Han, Wenji Sun, Kiersten P. Clark, Bartley P. Griffith, Zhongjun J. Wu

Summary: High levels of non-physiological shear stress mainly activate platelets by enhancing the vWF-GPIb alpha interaction. Shear-induced platelet activation and receptor shedding occur through distinct pathways.

Alteration of γδ T cell subsets in non-human primates transplanted with GGTA1 gene-deficient porcine blood vessels

Sujin Lee, Yun Shin Chung, Kyo Won Lee, Miran Choi, Chung Hee Sonn, Won Jun Oh, Hun Gi Hong, Joohyun Shim, Kimyung Choi, Sung Joo Kim, Jae Berm Park, Tae Jin Kim

Summary: The involvement of gamma delta T cells in xenograft rejection was investigated in a study on cynomolgus monkeys transplanted with vessel xenografts from pigs. The study found that the gamma: delta TCR repertoire was significantly altered post-xenotransplantation, suggesting the important role of gamma delta T cells in sustained xenoreactive immune responses.

Twelve-month kidney and liver outcomes of kidney transplantation from Hepatitis C Viremic deceased donors to aviremic recipients

Laura A. Binari, Peter Thorne, Scott A. Rega, Irene D. Feurer, Saed Shawar, Ruchi Naik, Kelly A. Birdwell, J. Harold Helderman, Anthony Langone, Bonnie Ann Sarrell, Heidi Schaefer, Bernard John DuBray, Kareem Eid, Laura Hickman, David Shaffer, Beatrice P. Concepcion, Rachel C. Forbes

Summary: Utilization of hepatitis C viremic deceased donor kidneys for aviremic recipients shows excellent short-term outcomes, and this study aims to understand longer-term outcomes. The study found no significant differences in kidney and liver function between recipients of HCV+ and HCV- kidneys in the first year posttransplant.

Summary: Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation remains the best consolidation strategy for acute myeloid leukemia with complex karyotype. AML with pure hyperdiploid karyotype may have a distinct prognosis after allo-HCT compared to non-pure hyperdiploid CK AML.

Impact of Share 35 liver transplantation allocation in Australia and New Zealand

Strasser, Winita Hardikar, Mark Brooke-Smith, Graham Starkey, Gary P. Jeffrey, Ed Gane, Michael Stormon, Helen Evans, Caroline Tallis, Amanda J. Byrne, Robert M. Jones

Summary: The implementation of Share 35 policy in Australia and New Zealand has significantly reduced waiting list mortality for patients with high MELD scores. There were no significant differences in post-transplant patient and graft survival between the Share 35 group and the Pre-Share 35 group. However, the intention-to-treat survival was improved in the Share 35 group.

Have a Heart: Tie It Off - Update on Recommendations Regarding Vascular Access Ligation After Successful Renal Transplant

Alyssa Stetson, Brianna Bangert, Saad Ahmad, Lulu Zhang, Alex Chang, Shalini Bumb, Madison Cuffy, Latifa Silski

Summary: The purpose of this review is to explore whether the complications and negative physiological effects of arteriovenous fistulas (AVF) in kidney transplant patients outweigh the benefits. Studies have shown that fistula ligation can decrease left ventricular mass and cardiac output, and improve symptoms of right heart failure. Current research is investigating the impact of AVF on quality of life and whether fistula flow can predict the benefits of ligation.

Bone implant substitutes from synthetic polymer and reduced graphene oxide: Current perspective

Rethinam Senthil

Summary: In this study, bone implant materials (BIM) were developed with excellent mechanical properties, bioactivity, antimicrobial characteristics, and biocompatibility. BIM showed significant deposition of bone tube apatite crystals after immersion in a simulated body fluids (SBF) solution. The results suggest that BIM has the potential to be tested as a bone implant material in large animals.

Graft survival and postoperative complications following orthotopic renal transplantation

Angelo Territo, Ismail Selvi, Aydan Malcok, Romain Boissier, Riccardo Campi, Thomas Prudhomme, Alessio Pecoraro, Alberto Piana, Alicia Lopez-Abad, Beatriz Banuelos Marco, Alberto Breda, M. Irfan Donmez

Summary: This narrative review provides an update on the clinical outcomes after orthotopic renal transplantation, finding comparable survival rates in both recipients and renal grafts, as well as lower complication rates compared to heterotopic renal transplantation. These results may encourage transplant centers to reevaluate their policies and consider orthotopic renal transplantation as an alternative technique.

Effect of serum panel reactive antibodies on allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in pediatric thalassemia patients: A single-center experience

Baris Malbora, Hakan Sarbay, Zeynep Dogusan, Abdullah Avni Atay

Summary: This study assessed the impact of serum panel reactive antibodies (PRA) on the outcomes of HSCT in pediatric thalassemia patients. The results showed that PRA-positive patients had higher rates of blood product transfusion requirements, but no statistical significance was observed. Therefore, identifying patients with high PRA levels can assist in optimizing transplant strategies and post-transplant care, leading to improved outcomes for the patients.
