Donation After Circulatory Death Liver Transplantation Early Challenges, Clinical Improvement, and Future Directions

Brianna Ruch, Kayla Kumm, Sandra Arias, Nitin N. Katariya, Amit K. Mathur

Summary: DCD liver transplantation is an underutilized method that can increase access to liver transplantation. With proper donor and recipient selection, matching, surgical technique, and perioperative management, these transplants can achieve similar patient and graft survival rates as DBD liver transplantation. The main limitations in the further growth of DCD liver transplantation are driven by risk aversion, and the current experience is mainly concentrated in large centers. With the advancement of regional and machine perfusion techniques, the definition of a viable DCD liver allograft may be redefined, encouraging wider usage and acceptance.

Intraoperative tissue sampling for histology in chronic osteomyelitis shows high neutrophil infiltration centrally and low remains in debrided presumed infection-free regions

Louise Kruse Jensen, Henrik Elvang Jensen, Hans Gottlieb

Summary: This study describes the histopathology of debrided bone tissue in chronic osteomyelitis (CO). The inflammatory response still exists after debridement, although it fades from the center. Sampling of debrided bone tissue must be performed initially during surgery to avoid underestimation of neutrophil infiltration.

Trigeminal or peripheral nerve stimulation improves functional outcomes of nerve recovery in a rodent forelimb gap repair model

Peter J. Nicksic, D'Andrea T. Donnelly, Weifeng Zeng, Allison J. Seitz, Samuel O. Poore, Aaron J. Suminski, Aaron M. Dingle

Summary: The study demonstrates that trigeminal nerve stimulation (TNS) or peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) can improve functional outcomes of peripheral nerve injury in rats. This finding is important in translating the therapy as a non-invasive treatment for high, mixed nerve injuries in humans.

M. Guiotto, C. M. Oranges, M. Cherubino, M. Maruccia, P. Tedeschi, D. F. Kalbermatten, W. Raffoul, P. G. di Summa

Summary: This study evaluated different surgical approaches for neoumbilicoplasty and correlated them with specific surgical needs. The results showed that direct suture, single flap, and multiple flap techniques can achieve overall satisfactory cosmetic outcomes with a low rate of surgical complications. Different surgical techniques are suitable for different patient populations and surgical scenarios.

Posthemithyroidectomy Hypothyroidism: Updated Meta-Analysis of Risk Factors and Rates of Remission

Konstantinos Apostolou, Ivan Paunovic, Maximos Frountzas, Vladan Zivaljevic, Katarina Tausanovic, Michael Karanikas, Ioannis Koutelidakis, Dimitrios Schizas

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and risk factors for hypothyroidism, both clinical and subclinical, following hemithyroidectomy in preoperatively euthyroid patients, as well as hypothyroidism remission and its time of remission. The study found a high occurrence of hypothyroidism after hemithyroidectomy, and factors such as age, gender, preoperative thyroid-stimulating hormone levels, preoperative thyroid antibodies, and surgical approach were associated with the development of postoperative hypothyroidism. The incidence of hypothyroidism was relatively high in Asia compared to Europe and Canada.
