Tracing Settler Colonialism: A Genealogy of a Paradigm in the Sociology of Knowledge Production in Israel

Areej Sabbagh-Khoury

Summary: In the context of settler colonialism, knowledge is closely linked with power, with apprehension of the Other serving as a tool of domination. The reemergence of the settler colonial paradigm in the study of the Israeli-Palestinian case challenges the traditional understanding of the Nakba, legitimizing Palestinians as historical agents and leading to reformulation by Palestinian scholars. This offers a critical potential for decolonizing the settler colonial structure and exclusive Jewish sovereignty, shaping not only research into the Israeli-Palestinian case but also approaches to decolonization and liberation.

Implementing Expanded Prenatal Genetic Testing: Should Parents Have Access to Any and All Fetal Genetic Information?

Michelle J. Bayefsky, Benjamin E. Berkman

Summary: The availability of prenatal genetic testing for a wide range of diseases raises questions about access to genetic information. The authors argue that parents should have access to useful information during pregnancy, but non-medical testing should be limited. They propose that regulation should be done through medical professional organizations instead of government and provide a framework for determining which tests should be recommended or offered.

Smart farming technologies adoption: Which factors play a role in the digital transition?

Carlo Giua, Valentina Cristiana Materia, Luca Camanzi

Summary: Smart Farming Technologies (SFT), as smart devices in the cyber-physical system, can enhance farm management by generating a large amount of data that can be used throughout the supply chain. However, the adoption of SFT has received limited attention compared to other digital agriculture technologies. This study investigates the adoption of SFT and finds that farmers' intention to use is mainly influenced by performance expectancy, complexity, and social influence, while organizational supporting conditions have minimal effect. The actual adoption decision is positively affected by formal integration along the supply chain and farm size for non-adopters, and by individual intention to use and specialization in the arable sector for adopters.

Government intervention, spillover effect and urban innovation performance: Empirical evidence from national innovative city pilot policy in China

Kang Gao, Yijun Yuan

Summary: This study uncovers the impacts of the national innovative city pilot (NICP) on urban innovation performance and innovation convergence. The results show that NICP has a long-term positive effect on innovation performance in local and surrounding areas, with a spillover effect occurring mainly within the provinces and geographical neighboring cities. The positive impacts of NICP on innovation performance in local and neighboring cities continue to be amplified as the quantiles of innovation performance increase. NICP also plays a positive role in accelerating innovation convergence across cities, and low-level innovation club has a stronger late-mover advantage in innovation convergence.

No Equity without Data Equity: Data Reporting Gaps for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders as Structural Racism

Brittany N. Morey, Richard Calvin Chang, Karla Blessing Thomas, Alisi Tulua, Corina Penaia, Vananh D. Tran, Nicholas Pierson, John C. Greer, Malani Bydalek, Ninez Ponce

Summary: Data on health and social determinants for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPIs) in the US are often hidden or reported in aggregate, leading to limited advocacy, resource allocation, and political power. While there have been improvements in national collection and reporting of NHPI data, federal data gaps and underreporting by states still exist, particularly in COVID-19 cases and deaths. The underrepresentation of NHPIs in resources allocation decisions for at-risk communities, determined by California's Healthy Places Index, highlights the need for equity in NHPI data to achieve health equity and social justice.

'Wanna trade?': Cisheteronormative homosocial masculinity and the normalization of abuse in youth digital sexual image exchange

Jessica Ringrose, Katilyn Regehr, Sophie Whitehead

Summary: This study reveals the significant impact of homosocial masculinity practices on digital sexual image exchange, including pressurized sexting, image based sexual harassment, and sexual abuse. The gain of homosocial masculinity currency through sharing images of girls' bodies contributes to these practices, while the rise of male nudes and humor culture lessen the sexual stigmatization of leaked dick pics. Providing time and space for boys to reflect on homosocial masculinity performances is crucial for disrupting these practices, and the conclusions outline new UK school guidance for tackling online sexual harassment, cyberflashing, and image-based sexual abuse.

How global value chain participation affects green technology innovation processes: A moderated mediation model

Dianxi Hu, Jianling Jiao, Yunshu Tang, Yuwen Xu, Jianrui Zha

Summary: Global value chain (GVC) embeddedness is an irreversible development paradigm in China's manufacturing sector. Green technological innovation, specifically process innovation and product innovation, plays a significant role in realizing cleaner production and environmental-friendly society. This study reveals the mediation effect of green process innovation and product innovation in GVC participation, and the positive moderating effect of environmental regulation. These findings provide theoretical evidence for improving GVC participation and promoting China's green and low-carbon transformation.
