Mind-body practices in chronic inflammatory arthritis

Jean Sibilia, Fabrice Berna, Jean-Gerard Bloch, Marc Scherlinger

Summary: Mind-body practices, such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, and Tai Chi, show promise in improving patient-reported outcomes in chronic rheumatic diseases, but their impact on inflammation and structural progression remains unclear.

Weight loss affects disease activity and treatment response in inflammatory rheumatic diseases

Anne Tournadre, Marine Beauger

Summary: Obesity alters the characteristics of adipose tissue, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, increased risk of chronic inflammatory diseases, and impact on treatment efficacy. Dietary and weight adjustments have a positive effect on improving inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

Type 1 interferons: A target for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs)

Alexis Mathian, Renaud Felten, Marta E. Alarcon-Riquelme, Antony Psarras, Philippe Mertz, Francois Chasset, Edward M. Vital, Laurent Arnaud

Summary: Improved understanding of the molecular basis of innate immunity has led to the recognition of type I interferons (IFNs) as key mediators in the development of immunemediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs). Pharmacological targeting of IFNs and their downstream signaling pathways, such as JAK1 and Tyk2, holds promise for the treatment of IMIDs.

Musculoskeletal physiotherapists' discharge practices for people treated with low back pain: A United Kingdom survey

Toby Smith, Gurpreet Singh, George Mcnamee, Christopher Newton

Summary: This study investigated the current practices for discharging people with low back pain (LBP) from physiotherapy services in the UK. Majority of physiotherapists used a shared decision-making and person-physiotherapist goal attainment approach to discharge patients with LBP. Some suggested that using a patient-initiated follow-up or graded discharge approach may be more suitable for patients at higher risk of pain flare or with low self-efficacy.

Senescence-regulatory factors as novel circulating biomarkers and therapeutic targets in regenerative medicine for osteoarthritis

Georges Marouna, Christina Fissouna, Marina Villaverde, Jean-Marc Brondelloa, Yves-Marie Pers

Summary: Recent discoveries have shown that the presence of senescent cells in osteoarticular tissues plays a crucial role in the development of osteoarthritis (OA). However, the senescence-regulatory factors associated with OA still need to be identified. Additionally, there is a lack of diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers currently used in clinics to evaluate OA patients. In the future, detecting senescence-regulatory biomarkers in patient fluids, along with imaging and clinical examination, could become a promising method for diagnosing, monitoring, assessing progression, and predicting prognosis in OA patients.

Osteoarthritis in patients with obesity: The bariatric surgery impacts on its evolution

Florent Eymard, Judith Aron-Wisnewsky

Summary: Obesity is a major modifiable risk factor for osteoarthritis (OA) and is associated with poorer outcomes in terms of pain, functional limitations, and response to treatments. Bariatric surgery (BS) can significantly reduce symptoms and improve function in patients with symptomatic knee OA, but its impact on long-term complications of arthroplasties appears to be disappointing. Overall, BS shows promise in reducing OA symptoms and potentially slowing disease progression.

Cardiovascular safety of zoledronic acid in the treatment of primary osteoporosis: A meta-analysis and systematic review

ShuangHua Liu, YiMei Tan, WeiDong Huang, HongSheng Luo, BingCheng Pan, Shuan Wu

Summary: This study assessed the cardiovascular safety of zoledronic acid in the treatment of primary osteoporosis. The results showed that in women with primary osteoporosis, zoledronic acid may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation and arrhythmias, but the cardiovascular risk in men with osteoporosis is uncertain.

Is glucocorticoid bridging therapy associated with later use of glucocorticoids and biological DMARDs during the disease course of patients with rheumatoid arthritis in daily practice? A real-world data analysis

L. van Ouwerkerk, S. A. Bergstra, T. D. Maarseveen, T. W. J. Huizinga, R. Knevel, C. F. Allaart

Summary: This study evaluated whether the initial use of glucocorticoid (GC) bridging in RA patients leads to a higher probability of long-term GC and bDMARD use. The results showed that patients who initially started GC had a higher risk of later GC use, but the risk of bDMARD use was not significantly increased.

Systematic calibration reduces sources of variability for the preliminary OMERACT juvenile idiopathic arthritis MRI- sacroiliac joint score (OMERACT JAMRIS-SIJ)

Walter P. Maksymowych, Nele Herregods, Nisha Varma, Arthur B. Meyers, Jennifer Stimec, Andrea S. Doria, Nikolay Tzaribachev, Tarimobo M. Otobo, Marion A. van Rossum, Joel Paschke, Stephanie Wichuk, Robert G. Lambert

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether systematic calibration improves the scoring proficiency of JAMRIS-SIJ and whether contrast-enhancement enhances its performance. The results showed that calibrated readers achieved greater reliability in scoring specific inflammatory and structural lesions. Sensitivity and reliability for scoring inflammatory lesions were higher on fluid-sensitive sequences compared to contrast-enhanced sequences. Therefore, systematic calibration should be implemented before using JAMRIS-SIJ in clinical trials, and it is unlikely that contrast-enhanced MRI will improve the performance of this method.
