Autistic Disturbances in Skin Containment: The Dermic Drive as a Psychoanalytic Concept in the Study of Autism

Leon S. Brenner

Summary: Esther Bick, a pioneer in the psychoanalytic concept of the skin, emphasizes the importance of the primal skin function in the early formation and integration of the human psyche. This article explores the association between disturbances in the skin function and the onset of autism, using a mathematical perspective of topology. It posits that autism originates from disruptions in a specific modality of the skin function, resulting in linguistic functionality and specific topological spaces. The article also suggests that the skin functions as a modality of Freudian drive, with the hypothesis of psychic foreclosure being a defining characteristic of the autistic psychic structure.

Boys and Their Muscles: The Paternal Object in Muscle Dysmorphia

Tom Wooldridge

Summary: This article discusses the psychodynamics of the paternal object in patients with muscle dysmorphia. It explains how the father-child object relation can contribute to the development of the disorder, where the father's narcissistic equilibrium is maintained by keeping the son small, vulnerable, and weak. This threatens the child's separation and individuation, leading to an idealization of masculine traits represented by muscularity. The article presents a clinical case to illustrate these dynamics.

It also discusses the use of reverie and poetry to enhance the analyst's sensitivity and responsivity to ephemeral moments.

Aner Govrin, Golan Shahar, Sharon Ziv-Beiman

Summary: This article presents the current state of affairs in Israel regarding psychoanalytic psychotherapy, including its historical development and its contentious relationship with other psychotherapy schools. The dominance of the psychoanalytic school in Israeli psychiatry, psychology, and psychotherapy has led to a political fight within the psychology profession. However, this fight has paradoxically resulted in the growth of Israeli psychoanalysis, making it more accessible to various applied psychology disciplines and influencing non-psychoanalytic schools of psychotherapy. The article also discusses future concerns, particularly the decreasing representation of psychoanalytic psychotherapy in psychology departments at research universities in Israel.
