The impact of mind wandering on the recall of central ideas

Summary: This study examined the impact of mind wandering on readers' memory for text. The results showed a negative association between mind wandering and recall of central ideas in the text. This effect was not explained by working memory, word reading, or general reading comprehension skills.

The Receptive Brain: Up-Regulated Right Temporal Alpha Oscillation Boosting Aha!

Summary: Chance favors the prepared mind, said Louis Pasteur. In this study, the researchers investigated the brain's receptivity to integrate new information and the experience of creative insights known as Aha! moments. They hypothesized that the transient oscillatory states of the brain would characterize its preparedness for these insights. Through a real-time brain-state-dependent cognitive stimulation experiment, they found that participants were more successful in utilizing clues and experienced more Aha responses when clues were presented at the up-regulated state of right temporal alpha oscillation. Additionally, they observed a negative correlation between the coupling of alpha oscillation phase and gamma oscillation power and the frequency of Aha moments. These findings highlight the role of brain oscillations in the Aha experience and provide insights into the neural mechanism underlying the brain's receptivity to integrate semantic information.

Identity Management Processes, Contextual Supports and Barriers, and Substance Use Among Sexual Minority Workers: A Social Cognitive Lens

Summary: Sexual minority individuals who have to manage their sexual identity at work may face higher rates of substance use, especially under stressful conditions such as workplace incivility. This study examined the relationship between the work environment, sexual identity management, and substance use among sexual minority workers. The findings suggest that workplace harassment moderates the relationship between identity disclosure and substance use, and plurisexual workers face unique challenges in the workplace.

Exploring the impact of authentic learning activities on school students' epistemic beliefs in the social sciences and humanities

Teachers' needs for an FASD-informed resource: A qualitative interview needs assessment based on the ADAPT-ITT framework

Summary: This study aims to provide a website for teachers that offers resources related to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and to understand teachers' needs and preferences in this area. The study found that teachers require evidence-based information and strategies for FASD, have limited time, and have different needs between special and general education teachers. Teachers were positive about the Families Moving Forward Program and felt it would fit well with their needs. The results will guide the adaptation process of the FMF Program.

Craving for music increases after music listening and is related to earworms and personality

Summary: Recent research suggests that music listening can induce chills during intense moments, and anticipative physiological and neural responses can occur prior to the chills. This study aimed to investigate craving for music and its psychological correlates through questionnaire assessments and measures of personality traits. The results showed a significant increase in craving for music after listening to a song, with a similar observation for earworms. Craving for music was related to earworms and baseline craving was associated with psychoticism and openness to experience. These findings highlight the occurrence and enhancement of craving reactions in music listening, consistent with previous addiction research.

Multiple baseline and multiple probe design studies targeting academic skills: Trends over time in effect sizes

Summary: Single-case design (SCD) is a quantitative experimental technique that uses effect sizes to evaluate outcomes in academic interventions. However, the selection and use of appropriate effect sizes in SCD research for academic skills can be complicated. This study examined the patterns of using effect sizes in SCD research and found that only a few commonly used effect sizes, mainly from standardized statistics, were suitable for summarizing changes in academic outcomes.
