Julie P. Phillips, Andrea L. Wendling, Jacob Prunuske, Molly E. Polverento, Christy J. W. Ledford, Deborah R. Erlich, Esther L. Guard, Amanda Kost, Iris Kovar-Gough, Amy L. Lee, Winston Liaw, Bich -May Nguyen, Morgan A. Pratte, Meghan F. Raleigh, Tomoko Sairenji, Dean A. Seehusen, Shelby Walker, Virginia Young, Christopher P. Morley

Summary: The United States, like many other nations, is facing a shortage of primary care physicians. Studies conducted in the US show that most quantitative studies are of low quality, with a focus on four common methodologic approaches and primarily examining effectiveness and impact, lacking planning and piloting studies. More qualitative methods and innovative approaches are needed in research on medical school interventions to support primary care specialty choice.

Resilience of the primary health care system - German primary care practitioners' perspectives during the early COVID-19 pandemic

Sandra Stengel, Catharina Roth, Amanda Breckner, Lara Cordes, Sophia Weber, Charlotte Ullrich, Frank Peters-Klimm, Michel Wensing

Summary: This study aimed to explore the responses of primary care practitioners during the early COVID-19 pandemic and analyze their impact on the resilience of the primary health care system. The study found that primary care practitioners demonstrated strong adaptability and resilience, but there were variations in the speed and scope of their responses. The establishment of Corona contact points was mainly driven by intrinsic motivation and self-initiative, although challenges such as lack of personal protective equipment and space constraints were identified. Primary care played an important role in coordination efforts, but regional capacity planning was needed.

Unintended consequences of patient online access to health records: a qualitative study in UK primary care

Andrew Turner, Rebecca Morris, Lorraine McDonagh, Fiona Hamilton, Sarah Blake, Michelle Farr, Fiona Stevenson, Jon Banks, Helen Atherton, Dylan Rakhra, Gemma Lasseter, Gene Feder, Sue Ziebland, Emma Hyde, John Powell, Jeremy Horwood

Summary: A study conducted in multiple general practices in England found that online patient access to medical records can lead to unintended consequences, including negative impacts on patients' understanding of their healthcare and potential compromises in the quality and safety of medical records. Contrary to the assumption of reduced workload, online access actually introduced additional work for healthcare providers. Therefore, further efforts are needed to prepare medical records for sharing and to adequately support practices in managing the unintended consequences of online access.
