Summary: Chitosan was used as a bio-based product for the development of microparticles that can specifically remove cerium ions through ion-imprinting technology. Microparticles with thiosalicylic hydrazide-modified chitosan (TSCS) were prepared and demonstrated good selectivity for Ce3+ removal. The mechanism of adsorption was found to be chelation of Ce3+ with the chelating units on TSCS.

Summary: A time-modulated encryption hydrogel was synthesized using carboxymethyl cellulose and carbon quantum dots. Carboxymethyl cellulose stabilized the carbon quantum dots in the hydrogel, ensuring its stability. The encryption/decryption of information was achieved through pH adjustment, application of EDTA and Cr (VI). Analysis of the fluorescence change mechanism revealed that the fluorescence quenching was potentially influenced by internal filtering effects and static quenching involving amino, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups present in the hydrogel.

Summary: This study developed a novel solid-state crosslinking method of alginate (ALG) for efficient removal of antibiotics (ATBs) traces from wastewater. Metal-ALG systems obtained by solid-state crosslinking showed promise in terms of ease of production, high efficiency, regenerability, and scalability potential. Fe-ALG and Zn-ALG demonstrated high removal capacity for certain antibiotics and could be successfully regenerated without loss of ATB removal capacity. Overall, the solid-state crosslinking method proved superior to ionotropic gelation in terms of ease of production, high cross-linking degree, and ATBs removal capacity.

Summary: The effects of puerarin on the gel properties of gellan gum were investigated, and it was found that puerarin enhanced the storage modulus and thermal stability of the composite hydrogel. The interactions between puerarin and gellan gum were controlled by hydrogen bonds. The study suggests that the GG/PUE composite hydrogel has potential applications in the food industry.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular interaction between hydrocolloids and sodium alginate in microspheres. The results show that hydrocolloids with branches or capable to coil can form complex networks with sodium alginate, hindering the diffusion of calcium ions and changing the texture characteristics of microspheres. Furthermore, stable and soft microcapsules encapsulating multiphase oil cores have been successfully prepared using droplet microfluidic technology.

Summary: This study presents a robust and convenient strategy for developing sustainable elastomers with excellent mechanical properties and varied functions. By incorporating sustainable rigid and soft segments in the rubbery side chains, the mechanical properties of the elastomers can be easily manipulated. The elastomers also exhibit outstanding adhesion behavior and prominent UV-shielding performance due to the introduction of additional dynamic network structure. Furthermore, the cross-linked elastomers show remarkable shape memory behavior.

Summary: This study proposes the utilization of fallen maple leaves as a source of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) for the development of CNC-stabilized Pickering emulsions for seafood preservation. Two types of CNCs were extracted from maple leaves under different alkaline conditions. The modified CNCs showed excellent stability in the Pickering emulsions, which were further enhanced with the incorporation of an antibacterial compound. The CNC-stabilized emulsions effectively inhibited bacterial proliferation and preserved the quality of shrimp.
