The last jump: epidemiology of suicides at the Tour Eiffel (Paris) between 1950 and 1989

Virginie Bourdin, Guillaume Mulier, Sophie Calle, Nathalie Minart, Philippe Charlier

Summary: This study aimed to determine the patterns of people who committed suicide by jumping near the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Analysis of unpublished records from the Paris Police Prefecture revealed that there were significantly more males than females who chose jumping as a suicide method. The peak of suicide occurred in August and October, while February had few suicide cases. Most suicides were associated with psychiatric pathologies, and the majority of cases resulted in death. Interestingly, there was a decrease in suicides on Mondays and a peak in suicide rate at noon. The implementation of protective measures in the early 1960s successfully reduced the overall number of suicides, as jumping is a convenient and close-range method.

Donor aKIR genes influence the risk of EBV and CMV reactivation after anti-thymocyte globulin-based haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Fei Gao, Zhuoyue Shi, Jimin Shi, Yi Luo, Jian Yu, Huarui Fu, Xiaoyu Lai, Lizhen Liu, Zhiyang Yuan, Zhongzheng Zheng, He Huang, Yanmin Zhao

Summary: A retrospective study found that donor activated killer immunoglobin-like receptor (aKIR) genes may have a synergistic effect on CMV and EBV reactivation after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). In patients with lymphoid disease, Tel B/x and KIR2DS3 genes offered the best protection against EBV and CMV reactivation. In patients with myeloid disease, grafts lacking Tel B/x and KIR2DS5 genes correlated with the lowest risk of CMV reactivation.
