The effects of the first versus second glaucoma drainage implant surgery in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma

Shuu Morita, Teruhiko Hamanaka, Tetsuro Sakurai, Satoshi Watanabe, Yoshihito Sakanishi, Nobuo Ishida, Nobuyuki Ebihara

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the outcome of non-valved glaucoma drainage implant surgery (GDIS) in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients. It found that the second GDIS may be as effective as the first GDIS in reducing intraocular pressure (IOP), but there is a higher risk of failure in young-age patients and the surgery may be ineffective in eyes requiring more stringent criteria.

Accuracy of intraoperative aberrometry versus modern preoperative methods in post-myopic laser vision correction eyes undergoing cataract surgery with capsular tension ring placement

Allison J. Chen, Christopher P. Long, Tianlun Lu, Kevin J. Garff, Christopher W. Heichel

Summary: This study aimed to compare the accuracy of intraoperative wavefront aberrometry (IWA) with modern intraocular lens formulas in post-myopic laser vision correction (LVC) patients undergoing cataract surgery. The results showed that Barrett True K (BTK) had better accuracy than Optiwave Refractive Analysis (ORA) and resulted in a lower percentage of hyperopic outcomes.

An evaluation of optometric advanced skills within a UK tertiary based setting

Anish Jindal, Safwana Abdulrasid, Padraig J. Mulholland, Vijay Anand, Dilani Siriwardena

Summary: This study investigated the advanced skills performed by optometrists at Moorfields Eye Hospital, the largest employer of hospital-based optometrists in the UK, and examined their alignment with the four pillars of advanced clinical practice. The results showed that optometrists are performing advanced skills within the hospital, particularly those with independent prescribing qualifications. However, there is a need for targeted AS courses with competency-based sign-off to support these skills further and enhance patient care. Further research is also necessary to explore how advanced care practitioners can contribute to workforce transformation.
