Transient osteoporosis of the hip in pregnancy - a case series

Shlomi Toussia-Cohen, Iris Eshed, Omri Segal, Matan Schonfeld, Raanan Meyer, Michal Axelrod, Itay Gat, Mordechay Dulitzky

Summary: This retrospective study examined women diagnosed with bilateral or unilateral transient osteoporosis of the hip during pregnancy or postpartum, and compared the outcomes of normal vaginal delivery and cesarean delivery. The results showed that women with transient osteoporosis of the hip had advanced maternal age, low body mass index, family history of osteoporosis, and a high prevalence of smoking and in-vitro fertilization pregnancies. Transient osteoporosis of the hip was bilateral in 25% of cases and presented postpartum in 50% of cases. There was no significant difference in maternal outcomes between normal vaginal delivery and cesarean delivery. Increased awareness of this potential diagnosis during pregnancy and postpartum may improve patient management and outcomes.

COVID-19 and obstetric outcomes: a single-center retrospective experience in a predominantly Black population

Melissa Kuriloff, Easha Patel, Ariel Mueller, Tinyan Dada, Colleen Duncan, David Arnolds, Sarosh Rana

Summary: This retrospective case series investigated the impact of perinatal COVID-19 diagnosis on obstetric and neonatal outcomes in a predominantly high-risk, urban Black population. The study found high rates of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, preterm delivery, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admission among COVID-19-positive pregnant patients. These findings suggest that SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy may exacerbate existing obstetric health disparities and disproportionately affect Black and publicly insured patients. Larger comparative studies are needed to further explore the potential racial and socioeconomic disparities in obstetric outcomes in the context of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy.

Polymorphisms in gene UGT1A1 modify the association of prenatal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with congenital heart diseases risk

Jing Tao, Nana Li, Zhen Liu, Ying Deng, Xiaohong Li, Fangfang Luo, Xiaoyan Li, Ping Yu, Jun Zhu

Summary: This study investigated whether maternal UGT1A1 genetic polymorphisms are associated with fetal susceptibility to congenital heart diseases (CHDs) and whether the risk is modified by maternal PAHs exposure. The results showed that the interaction between UGT1A1 rs4148323 polymorphism and PAHs exposure was associated with CHDs. Pregnant women with high-level PAHs exposure and rs4148323 had an increased risk of carrying CHDs fetuses. The importance of this finding should be further confirmed in a larger-scale study.
