Endometrial protein expression and phosphorylation landscape decipher aberrant insulin and mTOR signalling in patients with recurrent pregnancy loss

Chao Chen, Qi Wen, Feng Deng, Rong Li, Ying Wang, Xiumei Zhen, Jing Hang

Summary: This study investigates the proteomic and phosphoproteomic differences in the endometrium of women with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) compared to healthy control women during different phases of the menstrual cycle. The results identify differentially expressed proteins and phosphorylated proteins, and highlight the insulin/cyclic nucleotide signalling pathway and AMPK/mTOR signalling pathway as major contributors to the abnormality of RPL endometrium. The findings provide insights into potential proteins associated with the pathogenesis of RPL and contribute to the identification of potential targets for RPL treatment.

The impact of menopause and serum DHEA-S level on the severity of Covid-19

C. . Tamer Erel, Ipek Betul Ozcivit Erkan, Neslihan Gokmen Inan, Kubra Hamzaoglu Canbolat, Sena Alkan, Dildar Konukoglu, Yalim Dikmen

Summary: This study aimed to compare the clinical course and outcomes of Covid-19 between premenopausal and postmenopausal women, and investigate the factors that influence disease severity. The results showed that premenopausal women had a more favorable prognosis, and age, postmenopausal status, and serum levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate were important predictors of the severity of Covid-19 in women.

Induction of labor versus expectant management in patients with idiopathic polyhydramnios

Corina N. Schoen, Sami Backley, Lauren Orr, Amrita Roy, Tiffany Corlin, Alexander B. Knee

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate whether induction of labor is associated with a lower risk of cesarean section in patients with isolated polyhydramnios. The study found that planned induction was associated with a lower rate of cesarean delivery compared to expectant management, but the difference was not statistically significant. Additionally, no differences were observed in maternal or fetal secondary outcomes.

Gym lifestyle factors and male reproductive health: a study into young adult usage and perceptions

Alice Newman-Sanders, Jackson C. Kirkman-Brown, Meurig T. Gallagher

Summary: This study revealed a significant lack of awareness among young adults in the UK regarding the potential impacts of gym lifestyles and supplementation on male infertility. Men were found to have a concerning lack of concern for their own fertility, with differences in awareness levels between men and women. It was also observed that men were more likely to consider making changes to their behavior if it had a long-term impact on their fertility compared to short-term effects.

Distinguishing preeclampsia using the falling scaled slope (FSS) -- a novel photoplethysmographic morphological parameter

Hang Chen, Feng Jiang, Wanlin Chen, Ying Feng, Shali Chen, Jiajun Miao, Cuicui Jiao, Xinzhong Chen

Summary: This study investigates the use of a novel parameter called falling scaled slope (FSS) based on photoplethysmographic pulse waves (PPGW) to diagnose preeclampsia (PE). The results show that FSS outperforms previous parameters in distinguishing PE, with an AUC value of 0.924, a threshold of 0.498, a sensitivity of 84.1%, and a specificity of 89.2%. Additionally, the use of machine learning algorithm for data analysis has advantages over conventional statistical methods, as indicated by the AUC values of 0.878 and 0.749, respectively.

The obesity associated FTO gene polymorphism and the risk of preeclampsia in Iranian women: A case-control study

Ghasem Azizi-Tabesh, Hossein Sadeghi, Arezoo Farhadi, Mohammad Foad Heidari, Aghdas Safari, Mehdi Shakouri Khomartash, Javad Behroozi, Saeid Doaei, Maryam Gholamalizadeh

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the possible association between FTO gene rs9939609 and the risk of preeclampsia (PE) in Iranian pregnant women. The results showed that pregnant women carrying the AA genotype had a significantly reduced risk of PE. Therefore, the rs9939609 polymorphism in the FTO gene may play a protective role against PE.

Long-term outcomes of patients with preeclampsia, a review of the literature

Alice Tassi, Alessia Sala, Ilaria Mazzera, Stefano Restaino, Giuseppe Vizzielli, Lorenza Driul

Summary: Hypertensive pregnancy disorders (HDP) affect 10% of pregnancies and increase the future risk of heart disease, chronic hypertension, kidney dysfunction, diabetes, and thromboembolism. The mechanisms are not well understood, but endothelial dysfunction, pro-inflammatory and procoagulant states seem to persist in women with a history of preeclampsia. The number and severity of complications differ according to the type of HDP. Lifestyle modifications and long-term follow-up are essential for reducing the risk of future diseases.

Short stature in small-for-gestational-age offspring born to mothers with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy

Sakurako Mishima, Takashi Mitsui, Kazumasa Tani, Jota Maki, Eriko Eto, Kei Hayata, Yosuke Washio, Junko Yoshimoto, Hirokazu Tsukahara, Hisashi Masuyama

Summary: This study aims to investigate the incidence and risk factors of small-for-gestational age (SGA) short stature at 2 and 3 years of age in SGA offspring born to women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP). The results showed that 41.2% of the offspring were diagnosed with SGA short stature, and prematurity before 32 weeks of gestation was the most significant factor for catch-up growth failure. Therefore, the incidence of SGA short stature is high in SGA offspring born to women with HDP, and prematurity is the main risk factor.

MiRNA-494 induces trophoblast senescence by targeting SIRT1

Sha Su, Linlin Zhong, Shijin Huang, Lingjie Deng, Lihong Pang

Summary: This study investigated the role of the miR-494/SIRT1 axis in preeclampsia (PE) and found that SIRT1 expression was decreased and miR-494 expression was increased in PE patients. Premature placental aging was observed in PE patients. Experimental validation confirmed the targeting relationship between miR-494 and SIRT1. Overexpression of miR-494 resulted in cell senescence, impaired migration, decreased ATP synthesis, increased ROS levels, and upregulated expression of inflammatory molecules, while overexpression of SIRT1 partially reversed these effects.
