Clinical and biochemical determinants of length of stay, readmission and recurrence in patients admitted with diabetic ketoacidosis

Fateen Ata, Adeel Ahmad Khan, Ibrahim Khamees, Phool Iqbal, Zohaib Yousaf, Bayan Z. M. Mohammed, Reham Aboshdid, Sandy K. K. Marzouk, Haidar Barjas, Madiha Khalid, Ihab El Madhoun, Mohammed Bashir, Anand Kartha

Summary: This study aimed to identify predictors of hospital length of stay (LOS), readmission, and recurrence in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) patients. The results showed that gender, new-onset DM, higher comorbidity index, lower levels of hemoglobin, sodium, and potassium, higher levels of urea, longer DKA duration, and admission to MICU were predictors of longer hospital LOS. None of the factors were significantly associated with 90-day readmission. Patients with pre-existing type 1 diabetes were more likely to have a six-month DKA recurrence compared to pre-existing type 2 diabetes. Consultation with a diabetes educator at the index admission was associated with decreased odds of recurrence.

Chunlong Yan, Dengfeng Tian, Chenhong Zhang, Qiang Zhang, Yanqiu Sun

Summary: This study aimed to explore the changes in blood cellular and biochemical parameters of rats in a natural environment of low pressure and low oxygen on the plateau. The results showed that under high-altitude environment, the rats' red blood cells and blood biochemical indicators changed, with improved oxygen carrying capacity, possibly reduced disease resistance, affected coagulation and hemostasis functions, and potential impact on liver function, renal function, heart function, and skeletal muscle energy metabolism.

Translation and validation of a Swedish version of the Visual Vertigo Analogue Scale

Tobias Wibble, Tony Pansell

Summary: The purpose of this study was to construct and validate a Swedish translation (VVAS-S) of the Visual Vertigo Analogue Scale (VVAS). The translation process involved two authors translating the original English version into Swedish, which was then back-translated by an independent professional translator. The translated version was found to be comparable to the original in terms of internal reliability and was perceived as easy to implement by participants, making it suitable for clinical use in a Swedish-speaking setting.

Efficacy and safety of Venetoclax-based regimens in relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective clinical trials

Wei He, Fang He, Huixian Hu

Summary: This study assessed the efficacy and safety of VEN-based treatments in relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma patients. The results showed that VEN treatment achieved meaningful responses in terms of ORR, CR, VGPR, and PR. Furthermore, multi-drug treatments were more effective than VEN +/- Dex treatments, and patients with t(11;14) translocation or high BCL-2 expression showed better response to VEN treatment.

Adiponectin-leptin ratio for the early detection of lean non-alcoholic fatty liver disease independent of insulin resistance

Chia-Wen Lu, Kuen-Cheh Yang, Yu-Chiao Chi, Tsan-Yu Wu, Chien-Hsieh Chiang, Hao-Hsiang Chang, Kuo-Chin Huang, Wei-Shiung Yang

Summary: Lean non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is similar to overweight NAFLD and should be detected early. The adiponectin-leptin ratio (AL ratio) may serve as a reliable marker for early detection of lean NAFLD independent of insulin resistance.

Xingyu Chang, Yaqi Wang, Yi Liu, Yanyu Shen, Jiaqing Feng, Qianqian Liu, Chenjun Jiang, Jing Yu, Xulei Tang, Gaojing Jing, Qianglong Niu, Songbo Fu

Summary: This study analyzed the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) in the pre-diabetic population and found a significant deviation in the diagnosis of SCH in the elderly. The prevalence of SCH was higher in females and the impaired fasting glucose population. However, age-related factors need to be further investigated.

Novel model predicts diastolic cardiac dysfunction in type 2 diabetes

Mingyu Hao, Xiaohong Huang, Xueting Liu, Xiaokang Fang, Haiyan Li, Lingbo Lv, Liming Zhou, Tiecheng Guo, Dewen Yan

Summary: This study developed a new nomogram model based on clinical parameters to predict diastolic cardiac dysfunction in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The model included age, body mass index (BMI), triglyceride (TG), creatine phosphokinase isoenzyme (CK-MB), serum sodium (Na), and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (UACR) as predictors. The model showed good predictive performance and can serve as a reliable tool for large-scale epidemiological studies and early screening of T2DM patients with cardiac complications.

Effect of antibiotic monensin on cell proliferation and IGF1R signaling pathway in human colorectal cancer cells

Youping Zhou, Youlin Deng, Jing Wang, Zhengjian Yan, Qiang Wei, Jixing Ye, Junhui Zhang, Tong-Chuan He, Min Qiao

Summary: In this study, it was found that monensin effectively inhibits cell proliferation, migration, and cell cycle progression, while inducing apoptosis and G1 arrest in human colorectal cancer cells. Monensin targets multiple cancer-related signaling pathways, including the IGF1R signaling pathway, by increasing IGF1 expression and suppressing IGF1R expression. These findings suggest that monensin has the potential to be repurposed as an anti-colorectal cancer agent. Further investigation is needed to understand the detailed mechanisms underlying its anti-cancer effects.

Comparative assessment of erythrocyte sphingolipid levels as potential cardiovascular health markers in women from Libya and Serbia: a small-scale study

Nevena Vidovic, Marija Knez, Marija Ranic, Fathia Faid, Dragana Jovic, Marija Glibetic, Marija Takic

Summary: This study investigated the sphingolipid content in the erythrocyte membrane of Libyan migrant and Serbian resident women, and found lower levels of sphingolipids and cholesterol in Libyan emigrants compared to Serbian residents. Additionally, the study found an inverse correlation between erythrocyte sphingolipid content and Omega-3 index, and a positive correlation with vitamin D status and membrane cholesterol levels. The study suggests that erythrocyte sphingolipid levels could serve as an additional biomarker of cardiovascular health, but further research in a larger population is needed.

The effects of etomidate on expression of high mobility group box 1 via the nuclear factor kappa B pathway in rat model of sepsis

Yoo Jung Park, Kwon Hui Seo, Jin Deok Joo, Hong Soo Jung, Yong Shin Kim, Ji Yung Lee, Hunwoo Park

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Etomidate on the expression and release of high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) in septic rats and found that Etomidate can inhibit the release and expression of HMGB1, which may be associated with its inhibitory effects on pro-inflammatory cytokine release and NF-kappa B activity.

Ten-year cost-consequence analysis of weight loss on obesity-related outcomes in privately insured adults with obesity in Saudi Arabia

Hussain A. Al-Omar, Nasser Aljehani, Ali Alshehri, Abdullah Al-Khenizan, Faisal Al-Shammari, Abdulmohsen Abanumay, Volker Schnecke, Joao L. Carapinha, Saleh A. Alqhatani

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the 10-year cost-consequence of weight loss on obesity-related outcomes in a sample of privately insured adults with obesity in Saudi Arabia (KSA). The findings showed that moderate weight loss of 5-15% over 10 years is associated with substantial cost savings, and prevented incidence cases of obesity-related outcomes. This could help policymakers implement weight loss programs in KSA.
