Generation 1822 in cultural memory

Dana Huckova

Summary: In the field of memory studies, literary texts serve as mediums for collective memory by selecting, reconstructing, and updating specific themes, images, and personalities. They contribute to forming our understanding of the past, transferring historical images, constructing memory relationships, and reflecting on collective memory processes and issues. Literature also creates collective images of past events, notable figures, interprets the present, and projects the future. To understand the symbolic significance of elements such as places of memory and figures of memory, reception processes and context play crucial roles. This theoretical framework guides the analysis of literary and literary-journalistic texts related to Slovak literary Romanticism representatives born in the 19th century, who played a significant role in the national revivalist movement and contribute to all three types of collective memory.
