Lorca's theatrical juvenileia: orthodoxy, transcendence and mockery in a symbolist key

Emilio Peral Vega

Summary: This article analyzes the theatrical pieces written by Garcia Lorca in his youth, prior to the premiere of "The Curse of the Butterfly" (1920). All of them are characterized by an obvious debt to symbolism, especially in terms of a supposed abandonment of theatrical realism and the creation of ethereal atmospheres inhabited by allegorical beings: animals, shadows, biblical characters... From this common aesthetic framework, Lorca shows a significant affinity for a religious imaginary seasoned with strong doses of heterodoxy and grotesque features.
