Summary: This paper analyzes the neo-stoic constantia in Andreas Gryphius' drama Catharina von Georgien (1657), proposing a vertical system that moves away from dichotomous positions and reflects the Baroque era's worldview.

Summary: J. M. R. Lenz's "Anmerkungen ubers Theater" is an aesthetic manifesto of the Sturm und Drang that criticizes Aristotle's Poetics in order to present a programmatic agenda for modern drama. This article argues that Lenz's treatment of the Poetics is not just a rhetorical foil for his own dramatic theories, but an integral part of the text's performance. By comparing the similarities in form and content between the two treatises, the analysis reevaluates the aesthetics of effect implicit in Lenz's work through the contrasting terms he employs. This study suggests that understanding the paradoxes of Lenz's text and uncovering its potential radicality can be facilitated by considering the role of catharsis, despite its absence in Lenz's explicit discourse.

Summary: Published in 1777, J.M.R. Lenz's novella Der Landprediger is a reflection of his intellectual and spiritual disorientation after being banished from Goethe's Weimar in 1776. The novella responds to agrarian reforms initiated by Margrave Carl Friedrich in Baden and highlights the interconnection between critiques of gender and discussions of economic and social reform. It aligns with feminist economics by depicting the struggles of the homo economicus as a crisis of masculinity and recognizing women as economic actors in the domestic sphere.

Summary: In his essay and fragmentary writings, Lenz uses physiocratic economics to radically restructure social relations. Lenz counters moderate reform efforts and emphasizes the role of labor instead of land-ownership in economic circulation. This restructuring extends to a less literal economy called "Konkupiszenz," which plays a central role in redefining the family in military reform. By liberating the flow of "Konkupiszenz" across classes, Lenz calls for a radical reorganization of the social and economic structure.

Summary: Navid Kermani's and Feridun Zaimoglu's engagements with Christian art as Muslims explore the potential and limitations of aesthetic experiences of the divine that go beyond doctrinal boundaries. Kermani's research reveals the ability of art to provide spiritual insight but also highlights subjective and epistemological barriers that restrict this potential, as seen in his rejection of certain Christian imagery. However, both Kermani and Zaimoglu offer syncretic interpretations that bridge Christian and Islamic ideas, pointing towards new understandings of the divine. Zaimoglu's contemporary icons further challenge religious boundaries and offer ambiguous connections to Christianity and Islam.

Summary: This article presents an alternative interpretation of Heinrich von Treitschke's historical writings, challenging the idea that 'great men make history' adequately captures his views on historical subjecthood. It argues that Treitschke's historiography emphasizes ideal, structural, and material factors, which provide the context for the actions of heroic individuals. The article also explores the historiographic landscape in nineteenth-century Germany, explaining the appeal of the heroic individual construct despite its decreasing plausibility, in relation to historiographic narrativization, historical constructivism, and anxieties around socioeconomic change.

Summary: According to existing historiography, the assumption is that coffee houses in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries played a key role in the socialization of the bourgeoisie, promoting intellectual growth through political and ethical discussions. However, through closer investigation of literary representations and judicial sources in Amsterdam between 1685 and 1785, it is revealed that coffee houses were often scenes of gambling and violence, lacking the civilizing character previously assumed. The diminishing number of coffee houses and the absence of literary representations after 1730 further challenge the idea of their significance in sociabilization.

Summary: The Rome Prize of the German Academy Villa Massimo is the most significant award for German artists, recognizing their achievements in various fields of arts. However, there is a lack of research on its position in the German literary and cultural-political system and its selection policy. This article aims to examine the institutional and personal networks of the Rome Prize, the objectives of the actors involved, and the mechanisms of selection by analysing archival material.
