Summary: This article explores how Paul Celan's poems go beyond time and are able to touch on others' histories and experiences, as well as being touched by them. By drawing on theories of touch in transnational German studies, this article outlines a framework for appreciating the connections facilitated by Celan's poetry.

Protest and the Opacity of Literature: James Baldwin and Paul Celan

Summary: This article analyzes Paul Celan's translation of James Baldwin's Everybody's Protest Novel and explores the connections between the poetics of these two writers. They both focus on human, creature, and darkness, and use literature to respond to historical catastrophes. The article demonstrates how reading their works together helps us understand their peculiar realism anew and highlights its continuing significance today, particularly in relation to Claudia Rankine's writing.
