Vietnamese fictive motion constructions: a construction grammar approach

Summary: This paper aims to investigate the construction types of fictive motion in Vietnamese using Talmy's framework and Goldberg's construction grammar approach. It describes the semantic characteristics and constraints of each construction type and constructs an interactive network based on subjectivity and abstraction level. This study provides an initial exploration of the typological characteristics of fictive motion in Vietnamese.

How long, o lord? - The question of time in theodicy

Summary: This paper examines the problem of theodicy from a temporal perspective. It argues that the concept of long time is deeply anthropocentric, as our perception of time is based on ourselves as measuring rods. The article addresses three objections and concludes that our appraisal of time may not be ontologically valid.

Towards ethno-political advocacy: Ethiopian journalists' professional role perceptions in post-EPRDF interregnum

Summary: The study explores how ethnic identity politics influence journalists' perception of their roles in the contemporary Ethiopian media landscape. Drawing on the analytical model of journalism culture and social identity theory, qualitative interviews were conducted with journalists from six media channels and media scholars. The findings suggest that the country's ethno-political context shapes the media environment, which in turn affects how journalists perceive their roles. The most notable institutional role perceptions in the current Ethiopian media system are promoting ethno-centric identity and culture, advocating for ethnic communities, mainstreaming regional politics and hegemony, and considering themselves as agents of change.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of democratic practices in Ende Lio District, Indonesia in 2015. It discusses how the Regional Autonomy Law has provided new opportunities for local leaders, but also resulted in the diminishing role of traditional leaders. The study analyzes the factors that led to the loss of authority and legitimacy of the informal leader, Mosalkai, through qualitative research methods.

The ornamentalization of masculinity in selected Nollywood films

Summary: The study explores the spatial politics of ornamental masculinity in Nigerian movies and its contribution to a gender-harming culture. Using creative content and language, the research examines the complex realities of narrative experiences and the evolution of patriarchal norms in a conservative space. Findings from visual research and dramaturgical analysis of three Nigerian movies reveal how privileged male protagonists promote social change. The study establishes a link between creative performance, masculinity, and the perpetuation of a dominant gender through a language of discourse that negatively portrays women while projecting masculinity as a shield.

Critical discourse analysis of the second inaugural speech of Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed

Summary: The study aims to investigate Abiy Ahmed's second inaugural speech and analyze the language used to construct a unity discourse. It employs critical discourse analysis and socio-cognitive model as analytical frameworks, revealing the use of lexical items, pronouns, figures of speech, and sayings in constructing unity ideology. Cognitive elements such as authority, evidentiality, polarization, and victimization are used to persuade the audience and maintain power. The speech primarily praises the inner circle and criticizes the outer circle.

Summary: The construction of news is institutionalized and follows certain standards, styles, rules, and rituals. Organizational discourse, including news, is a collection of texts that do not merely reflect reality but constitute it. Investigating news from a postfoundational discourse analysis perspective has methodological challenges that can be overcome by incorporating critical realist discourse studies.

Strategic lexicalization in courtroom discourse: A corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis

Summary: This paper adopts a corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis approach to explore the pragmatics of lexical categories in courtroom discourse. The data used is taken from the testimony of former American President William Clinton during his impeachment trial for the 'Monica Lewinsky Affair'. The main findings reveal that lexical categories in courtroom discourse serve as pragmatic meaning carriers with functions beyond their commonly-used semantic sense.

I won't buy that for a dollar: Orientalist representation of masculinity in remake of RoboCop movie

The study focuses on the remake of RoboCop (2014) and analyzes the power dynamics and characteristics of masculinity between different male characters, particularly white western men and brown eastern men. It also explores the fundamental change brought by the involvement of Middle Eastern characters in the film.

Identity struggle through the negotiation of cultural identity in the translation of French cultural references into Javanese

Summary: This study examines the negotiation of French cultural identity in Javanese translation and highlights the importance of translation as a means of cross-cultural communication. The findings suggest that the translator tends to negotiate the meaning of two languages within similar semantic vocabularies, but borrows or negotiates the form if there is no cultural equivalent in Javanese. This study contributes to the understanding of cultural identity in translation studies.

Summary: In this article, the author analyzes the successful adaptation of the dramatic work Mo Fei by Polish director Krystian Lupa. Lupa adapted several pieces by contemporary Chinese writer Shi Tiesheng and brought metaphysical and spiritual content rarely seen in Chinese theatre. Lupa's unique theatrical methods and reflection of his characteristic aesthetic have important inspirations for the Chinese theatre industry.

Benefits of Facebook Usage (as a Web 2.0 Application) in Foreign Language Instruction in Higher Education: A Meta-Analysis Study

Summary: This study reviewed and analyzed the benefits of using Facebook in foreign language instruction, particularly in teaching and learning English at higher educational institutions. Based on a meta-analysis of 33 studies, five main roles and benefits of using Facebook were identified, including increased learner engagement, improved academic performance, support for cross-cultural awareness and collaborative learning, enhancement of interactive and communicative learning, and immersion in meaningful learning experiences. Conclusions and recommendations were provided based on the findings.

The negative cultural impact of tourism and its implication on sustainable development in Amhara Regional State

Summary: Tourism is a significant industry that impacts human life, where the interaction between culture and tourism can have both positive and negative outcomes. The impact of tourism on culture has become a popular topic among scholars, as it can either enhance cultural diversity or lead to the destruction of destination communities' cultures. This study focuses on understanding communities' perceptions of the negative cultural impact of tourism. The findings indicate that tourism has led to the commoditization of society's culture, erosion of local communities' socio-cultural assets, and the production of inauthentic products, emphasizing the need for responsible stakeholders to minimize negative impacts.

Co-construction of desired behavior through health talk radio program in Ethiopia

Summary: This article analyzes a health talk radio program in Ethiopia, focusing on its structural organization and collaborative work of the participants in promoting social behavior change related to public health concerns. The participants employ interaction resources throughout the talk show, marking and enhancing its institutional features. The analysis is based on over 8 hours of recorded and transcribed talk data from a public FM radio station. It contributes to the research on media discourse and health education by examining a linguistically and socio-culturally distinct context (Ethiopia) and a less studied sub-genre of talk radio (public health).

This study focuses on Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana, and examines the use of street graphics for branding purposes, revealing an identity crisis and a lack of clear city branding.

The downhill journey of the Java sugar economy in the Netherlands Indies (Later Indonesia) from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century

Summary: This paper examines the reasons why the Java sugar industry quickly declined after the 1930s from a position of hegemony in the international sugar economy to a purely domestic Indonesian market level. The decline was caused by the global economic crisis, the Second World War and the Japanese occupation, stiff market competition, the impact of the international sugar agreement, the Indonesian revolution and the post-revolutionary crisis, as well as policy and institutional problems.

Summary: The usage of deixis in sermons, especially in Islam, has been understudied. This study investigated deixis in Friday sermons by Muslim preachers in Yemen, analyzing the shape, purpose, feature, and frequency of the three main categories of deixis (personal, spatial, and temporal). The results showed that deixis were frequently used by preachers to engage listeners and structure discourse.

Summary: The principle of Gesamtkunstwerk in the 19th century was closely linked to the interwar avant-garde and represented in manifestos and programmatic writings of various periodicals. However, the idea of using the interrelation of arts for social and cultural renewal proved difficult to implement. This article aims to explore whether the synthesis of arts was an unachievable dream by analyzing programmatic writings and examining the actual cooperation between artists and architects.
