Sex modifies effects of imaging and CSF biomarkers on cognitive and functional outcomes: a study of Alzheimer's disease

Summary: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory and functional impairments. This study analyzed participants from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative and found differential associations between cerebral spinal fluid (CSF)/neuroimaging biomarkers and cognitive/functional outcomes, as well as variations between sexes. These findings suggest that sex differences may play a role in the development of AD.

The informal discussion of advance care planning among Chinese older adults: Do education and social media use matter?

Summary: This study aimed to compare the associations between education, social media use, and advance care planning discussion among Chinese older adults. The findings showed positive associations between education and ACP discussion in Taiwan and Honolulu, as well as positive associations between social media use and ACP discussion in Wuhan and Honolulu. Social media use attenuated the association between education and ACP discussion in Honolulu.

Description of the mealtime of older adults with dementia in a long-term care facility: A video analysis

Summary: This study analyzed mealtime structure in long-term care facilities for older adults with dementia. Video observations were conducted at two facilities, involving 10 residents and 24 staff members. The findings showed that the average mealtime duration was 12.21 minutes, with an average time of 0.21 minutes for a single intake and a median eating interval of 0.17 minutes. It was also observed that residents failed to eat properly an average of 5 times during mealtime. The study emphasized the importance of implementing a patient-centered mealtime assistance program.

Investigating the effects of age and prior military service on fluid and crystallized cognitive functions using virtual morris water maze (vMWM) and NIH Toolbox tasks

Summary: This study examined the relationship between military service and normal age-associated cognitive changes. By comparing young and older healthy individuals, multiple virtual Morris water maze tasks and NIH Toolbox cognitive tasks were conducted. The results showed that among older males, the virtual Morris water maze tasks appeared to be more sensitive to military service, with older male veterans showing significant deficits in spatial learning, cognitive flexibility, and working memory.

Auditory robustness and resilience in the aging auditory system of the desert locust

Summary: This study investigated the effects of age on the robustness and resilience of auditory system using the desert locust. The researchers found that gene expression changes were mainly influenced by age rather than noise exposure. Both young and aged locusts were able to recover their auditory nerve function within 48 hours of noise exposure, but the recovery of transduction current magnitude was impaired in aged locusts. Key genes responsible for robustness to noise exposure in young locusts and potential candidates for compensatory mechanisms in auditory neurons of aged locusts were identified.

The impact of menopause and serum DHEA-S level on the severity of Covid-19

Summary: This study aimed to compare the clinical course and outcomes of Covid-19 between premenopausal and postmenopausal women, and investigate the factors that influence disease severity. The results showed that premenopausal women had a more favorable prognosis, and age, postmenopausal status, and serum levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate were important predictors of the severity of Covid-19 in women.

Psychometric validation of the Chinese digital health literacy instrument among Chinese older adults who have internet use experience

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of DHLI in assessing eHealth literacy among older adults in China. The results demonstrated that the C-DHLI showed good psychometric performance in assessing eHealth literacy among Chinese older adults. The findings can support healthcare professionals to effectively measure eHealth literacy among older adults and conduct tailored eHealth interventions or training.

Summary: This study examined the accuracy of using a body mass index (BMI) cut-off point of >= 30 kg/m2 to classify obesity in older adults, finding that it had low sensitivity. However, BMI-derived cut-off points based on fat mass index (FMI) and fat mass percentage (FM%) showed better accuracy and balance in classifying obesity in older men and women.

Evidence for an association between allostatic load and multisensory integration in middle-aged and older adults
