Cutaneous Fungal Infections in Older Adults

Saniya Shaikh, Aditya Nellore

Summary: As the patient population aged older than 65 years increases, it becomes crucial to recognize and treat skin conditions seen in this age group. Treatment choices should take into consideration the physiological characteristics of older adults, their long medication lists, and their social living conditions. Simple regimens with low risk of drug interactions should be prescribed to these patients to enhance their quality of life.

Associations of individual chronic diseases and multimorbidity with multidimensional frailty

Robbert J. J. Gobbens, Sandra Kuiper, Henriette Dijkshoornf, Marcel A. L. M. van Assen

Summary: This study examined the associations between chronic diseases and multidimensional frailty comprising physical, psychological, and social frailty. The results showed that chronic diseases, especially urinary incontinence and severe back disorder, were associated with frailty. The study recommends assigning different weights to individual chronic diseases in measuring multimorbidity and its effects on multidimensional frailty.

Bidirectional associations of high-level cognitive domains with hand motor function and gait speed in high-functioning older adults: A 7-year study

Kimi Estela Kobayashi-Cuya, Ryota Sakurai, Naoko Sakuma, Hiroyuki Suzuki, Susumu Ogawa, Toru Takebayashi, Yoshinori Fujiwara

Summary: The study found a positive bidirectional association between hand dexterity and maximum gait speed with executive function performance, while handgrip strength and usual gait speed showed no associations. This suggests that hand dexterity and motor speed have an important impact on cognitive function and are mutually dependent on each other.

Utility of iron biomarkers in differentiating menopausal status: Findings from CoLaus and PREVEND

Lum Kastrati, Dion Groothof, Hugo G. Quezada-Pinedo, Hamidreza Raeisi-Dehkordi, Lia Bally, Martin H. De Borst, Stephan J. L. Bakker, Pedro-Marques Vidal, Michele F. Eisenga, Taulant Muka

Summary: The study aimed to examine the association between iron biomarkers and menopausal status and assess whether these biomarkers can help differentiate menopausal status beyond age. The results showed that iron biomarkers were significantly associated with menopausal status in both cohorts and modestly improved a model with age alone for differentiating menopause status.

Association between changes in potentially inappropriate medication use and adverse outcomes during hospitalization in older adults: A retrospective study

Ying-Hsin Hsu, Ming-Yueh Chou, Wei-Cheng Chang, Miao-Ting Chen, Yu-Chun Wang, Mei-Chen Liao, Chih-Kuang Liang, Liang-Kung Chen, Yu-Te Lin

Summary: This study evaluated the association between the change in the number of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) in older adults during hospitalization and adverse outcomes. The results showed that increasing PIM use was strongly associated with higher functional decline, prolonged length of stay, and mortality rate. Older adults with three or more PIMs had the greatest risk for adverse outcomes during hospitalization.

Sleep disturbances and interrelationship between persons with dementia and family caregivers: The lived experiences of Korean American Dyads

Eunae Ju, Candace Burton, Julie Kim, Yuqing Guo, Jung In Park, Annie Qu, Lisa Gibbs, Jung-Ah Lee

Summary: This study investigates the sleep quality in dyadic interrelationships between Korean American persons with dementia (PWD) and their family caregivers. The findings reveal bidirectional influences in the sleep disturbances of these dyads, where caregiving impacts PWD sleep as part of an interactional unit. Communication barriers and limited community resources pose challenges for these dyads, highlighting the importance of culturally competent interventions.

Predictors of self-regulation fatigue patterns in patients before total knee arthroplasty: A cross-sectional study

Yawei Shan, Haiying Lu, Xiaoyu Liu, Ru Chen, Jing Shang

Summary: This study aimed to identify subgroups of patients before total knee arthroplasty based on the heterogeneous patterns of self-regulation fatigue and analyze the predictors of these subtypes. The results revealed three latent classes: low, medium, and high self-regulation fatigue. Lower levels of hope, social support, self-efficacy, and education were identified as major predictors for the high self-regulation fatigue class. These predictors can help identify vulnerable populations and provide a foundation for targeted interventions.
