Photocatalytic degradation of noxious p-nitrophenol using hydrothermally synthesized stannous and zinc oxide catalysts

Influence of particle shape on creep and stress relaxation behaviors of granular materials based on DEM

Summary: Creep and stress relaxation behaviors in granular materials are influenced by the time-dependent changes in their microstructure, with particle shape playing a significant role. However, the effects of particle shape on these behaviors are still not well understood. In this study, 3D DEM models incorporating the rate process theory and superellipsoids are used to simulate creep and stress relaxation in granular samples with different aspect ratios and blockiness. The results show that both aspect ratio and blockiness have a significant influence on creep and stress relaxation, with aspect ratio affecting creep through contact force ratio and blockiness affecting stress relaxation through variation in normal contact force anisotropy. These findings provide insights into the effects of particle shape on creep and stress relaxation in granular assemblies.

Direct method to estimate the gas loss characteristics and in-situ gas contents of shale

Summary: This paper presents a modified method for calculating the lost gas content of shale by analyzing the coring and on-site desorption processes. The method accurately depicts the loss characteristics of free and adsorbed gas and identifies parameters that influence the calculation of in-situ shale gas content. The results demonstrate that the method shows satisfactory applicability in gas loss curve prediction and in-situ gas content estimation.

Multiple island effects shape oceanographic processes and zooplankton size spectra off an oceanic archipelago in the Tropical Atlantic

Summary: In this study, CTD and ADCP data, as well as zooplankton samples from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, were used to analyze the relationship between flow, island topography, chlorophyll-a fluorescence, and zooplankton abundance. The study found the presence of island and larval island effects downstream, and an upstream island effect upstream.

Interannual variability in otolith biogeochemical signatures of Japanese Spanish mackerel in the Yellow Sea

Effects of afforestation and upslope distance on soil moisture and organic carbon, and trade-off between them, on the Loess Plateau hillslopes

Summary: Large-scale afforestation on the Loess Plateau of China may lead to increased soil moisture deficit and SOC loss, especially in downslope areas. Natural grassland, on the other hand, exhibits low water depletion and high SOC sequestration. Therefore, a vegetation restoration strategy involving afforestation of downslope patches within a contiguous grassland matrix may be an effective approach.

High-resolution temporal variations of nitrate in a high-elevation pond in alpine tundra (NW Italian Alps)

Summary: This study utilizes a UV-Vis submersible spectrophotometric probe to measure the concentration of nitrate nitrogen in a high-elevation pond. Through continuous measurements and analysis of stable isotopes, meteorological data, and water temperature, the study examines the dynamics of nitrate in response to changes in meteoclimatic conditions. The results highlight the significant influence of summer precipitation, snow melt, and temperature on nitrate concentration, with short-duration meteorological events causing rapid variations. Additionally, the study reveals the important role of in-pond biological processes and the impact of heavy rainfall events on nitrate trends in high-elevation ponds.

High resolution landslide susceptibility mapping using ensemble machine learning and geospatial big data

Summary: Mud volcanoes in northwestern Colombia are used by local people as affordable recreational and wellness centers, particularly for pelotherapy. This research aims to determine the potential therapeutic value of the solid and liquid fractions of the muds sampled from these volcanoes through geochemical and mineralogical analysis. The study found that the muds are suitable for use by the local population due to their extremely low levels of contaminants harmful to human health.

Summary: The present study aimed to quantify the contributions of decapod crustaceans to the zooplankton in coastal tropical ecosystems and found that decapods were the second most important organisms, after copepods, in abundance, biomass, and biovolume. Crabs and shrimps were the most relevant decapod taxa in these ecosystems.

Fluid evolution in the Permian Maokou Formation in the Tailai Gas Field, eastern Sichuan Basin, China

Interactions between soil bacterial communities, assembly processes and microbial functions along the elevational gradient

Summary: By studying soil samples from different slope directions along an elevational gradient in a mountain ecosystem, we found that soil bacterial diversity and microbial functions exhibit distinct elevational patterns, which are consistent across slope directions. The bacterial diversity shows a hump-shaped pattern, while microbial functions exhibit a linear increasing trend. Additionally, the beta diversity pattern of soil bacteria is significantly influenced by elevational distance decay relationships. Soil bacterial diversity patterns are determined by transitions in community assembly processes, whereas microbial functions are mainly influenced by bacterial community composition.

Assessment of thermal maturity in Lower Cambrian organic-rich shale in south China using integrated optical reflectance and Raman spectroscopy of pyrobitumen

Two-phase modelling of erosion and deposition process during overtopping failure of landslide dams using GPU-accelerated ED-SPH

Unravelling the elevation-dependent warming in the Indus Basin

Summary: This study explores the elevation dependent warming in the Indus River Basin and its impacts on cryospheric and hydrological changes. The results show significant warming trends in the Tmax and Tmin in the upper Indus Basin, with a more prominent trend observed during the winter season for Tmax. These consistent warming trends can have harmful impacts on the cryosphere of the region, leading to water scarcity and extreme droughts.

Predicting peak shear strength of rock fractures using tree-based models and convolutional neural network

Summary: This study develops data-driven criteria to estimate the peak shear strength (PSS) of rock fractures, considering the effects of surface roughness features. A high-quality dataset is created using particle-based discrete element method and diamond-square algorithm. Tree-based models and convolutional neural network are trained to predict the PSS of rock fractures, and their reliability is verified using experimental data.
