Producing whiteness through urban space: the socio-spatial construction of white identities in Amsterdam

Summary: This article argues for considering urban neighborhood spaces in the formation of whiteness, proposing a co-constitutive process between space and race. Based on ethnographic research in a diverse neighborhood in Amsterdam, the analysis identifies four socio-spatial practices that contribute to the construction of white identities.

Vulnerability governance as differential inclusion: the struggles of asylum seekers in Marseille

Summary: This article examines vulnerability governance in the context of securitization of migration and budget constraints in the reception system in France. The study reveals a 'differential inclusion' of vulnerable individuals, which is partial, conditional, and precarious. It explores how normative constructs of gender and sexuality inform the identification and hierarchization of vulnerability, as well as how these norms are perpetuated and strategically mobilized or internalized by governance actors and asylum seekers. The article also highlights the contestation of protection-seeking migrants against the authorities' understanding and operationalization of vulnerability through protests and legal actions.

A cross-sectional study of knowledge, taboos, and attitudes towards menstruation

Mixed-race Pushkin: racial ambiguity and The Lady Peasant

Summary: The concept of racial ambiguity helps us better understand Aleksandr Pushkin, a Russian poet with partial African descent, who challenged existing racial categories. Pushkin's mixed-race background and light skin set him apart from his peers and the prevalent notions of Africanness. This ambiguity is evident both in memoirs about Pushkin and in his work, where characters adopt multiple identities. Recognizing Pushkin's racial ambiguity enhances our understanding of his exploration of shifting identities.

Same religion, different treatment. The role of origin country characteristics in employers' decisions to hire Muslims

Summary: Using data from a cross-nationally harmonised correspondence test, this study examines how employers in five European labor markets respond to applications received from Muslim job seekers with ancestry from different origin countries. The findings suggest that callback rates for Muslims are lower when the origin country has higher levels of authoritarianism and gender inequality. The association between authoritarianism and callbacks is particularly significant for men, indicating that Muslim men face greater exclusion from employment opportunities.

Media framing and public perception: the use of war metaphor in times of COVID-19

Summary: This study explores how the war metaphor in China's media discourse framed COVID-19 and its influence on the public's perception and response. Through analysis, three sub-frames were discovered, which played a role in legitimizing regulations and evoking the public's response. Interviews found that while the war metaphor had some influence on perception, it did not enter public discourse, with the responsibility frame being employed instead. This highlights the importance of considering sociocultural contexts when studying metaphors and frames in discourse and communication.

Should I stay or should I go? Analysing returnee overseas Filipino workers' reintegration measures given the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary: This paper investigates whether various forms of assistance to returnee overseas Filipino workers during the COVID-19 pandemic prompt them to stay home or return overseas. The study finds that although the Philippine government has provided multifarious economic and non-economic forms of assistance to returnee workers, the differential in earnings between local and overseas employment, coupled with income disruption caused by the pandemic, still drive them to desire returning to overseas labor migration.
