Recent Advances in Researches on Vehicle Scanning Method for Bridges

Z. L. Wang, Judy P. Yang, K. Shi, H. Xu, F. Q. Qiu, Y. B. Yang

Summary: The vehicle scanning method (VSM) is an indirect approach for bridge measurement that does not require sensors to be mounted on the bridge but only on the test vehicle. It has been extensively applied in various aspects of bridge measurement, such as construction of mode shapes, identification of damping ratios, and detection of damages. The indirect method offers advantages in terms of mobility, economy, and efficiency compared to the conventional direct method. The VSM has seen significant growth in research, with lab experiments, field tests, and the incorporation of modern devices enhancing its capabilities.

Building design and construction strategies for a circular economy

Leonora Charlotte Malabi Eberhardt, Morten Birkved, Harpa Birgisdottir

Summary: The environmental impacts, resource consumption and waste generation from buildings have raised concerns in the political and industry sectors. Interest in adopting circular economy strategies to address these issues has grown, but there is still a lack of widespread adoption and fragmented development and implementation of circular economy strategies in the building industry. A systematic literature review was conducted to assess the connection between circular economy and design and construction strategies for new buildings. The study reveals the development of this field and provides directions for future research. The study also highlights the lack of knowledge about the environmental performance and benefits of different building design and construction strategies, which hinders the greater adoption of circular economy in the industry.

He Li, Cheng-Geng Huang, C. Guedes Soares

Summary: This paper proposes an FMEA-BN model for determining the inspection and opportunistic maintenance strategies of floating offshore wind turbines. The model utilizes a mapping algorithm to establish a mirrored Bayesian Network (BN) model based on failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) structure, allowing for efficient consideration of common cause failures. By updating the failure probabilities of components using the BN sub-model, and utilizing the FMEA sub-model, this model suggests inspection and maintenance strategies for floating offshore wind turbines under various operation scenarios. The validation of the results demonstrates the effectiveness of the model in supporting real-time inspection and maintenance strategies determination for complex systems like floating offshore wind turbines.
