Differences on the level of hepatic transcriptome between two flatfish species in response to liver cancer and environmental pollution levels

Summary: Environmental factors can cause cancer in both wild animals and humans. The use of polluted habitats provides opportunities to study cancer defense mechanisms, which can be influenced by genetic variation and natural selection. Flatfish species, specifically flounders, show higher resistance to pollution-induced cancer compared to dabs, with elevated pollutant metabolism and stronger tumor suppression mechanisms in their liver tissue. This suggests a potential hormetic upregulation of tumor suppression or stronger natural selection pressure for cancer resistance in flounders. Wild species offer valuable insights into understanding the nature and evolution of natural cancer defense mechanisms.

Differences in serum selenoprotein P profile between C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice fed high-fat diet

Summary: C57BL/6 mice and BALB/c mice showed different expression profiles of selenoprotein P after a high-fat diet (HFD). C57BL/6 mice in the HFD group had higher body weight, fasting plasma glucose levels, and plasma selenoprotein P levels compared to the ND group. However, BALB/c mice did not show significant differences in fasting plasma selenoprotein P levels between the HFD and ND groups.

Insulin signaling in insulin-dysregulated Icelandic horses

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between insulin dysregulation and the expression and phosphorylation of key proteins in the insulin signaling cascade in different tissues of horses. The results showed enhanced phosphorylation of the insulin receptor and protein kinase B in response to stimulation, while phosphorylation of adenosine monophosphate protein kinase alpha decreased after glucose administration. Interestingly, horses with insulin dysregulation had significantly higher phosphorylation of mechanistic target of rapamycin in muscle tissue. These findings suggest that insulin signaling is maintained in horses, but post-receptor alterations may occur.

The results demonstrate that Vit E improves behavioral disorders, attenuates the loss of nigral dopaminergic neurons, and restores mitochondrial function. Additionally, the protective effect of Vit E may be associated with the upregulation of CHRM1 and KCNJ4 mRNA.

Future research should focus on elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms, including endocrinology, to resolve outstanding questions about avian hippocampal function and organization.

A preliminary predictive model for selenium nutritional status in residents based on three selenium biomarkers

Summary: This study investigated the transport of selenium through the soil-crop-human chain in regions with different selenium levels. It found that the residents' dietary selenium intake was related to the selenium content in soil, with one village within the WHO recommended intake range while the other village was at risk of selenium deficiency. There were significant positive correlations between residents' dietary selenium intake and the three selenium biomarkers.

Glucocorticoids and intrauterine programming of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Summary: Accumulating evidence suggests that NAFLD has an intrauterine origin, with adverse prenatal environments and glucocorticoid exposure playing a crucial role in the developmental programming of fetal hepatic lipid metabolism. The offspring's glucocorticoid-insulin-like growth factor 1 (GC-IGF1) axis is programmed in utero, leading to postnatal catch-up growth and disrupted glucose and lipid metabolism, increasing susceptibility to NAFLD. Mismatch between intrauterine and postnatal environments can further disturb the programmed endocrine axes and accelerate the onset of NAFLD.
