Summary: The study analyzed the relationship between serum lumican levels and osteosarcopenia in older adults, showing that older adults with osteosarcopenia had lower serum lumican levels. Lower serum lumican levels were associated with reduced bone mass and grip strength, indicating that lumican levels could be used as a biomarker for assessing the risk of osteosarcopenia, osteoporosis, or sarcopenia in older adults.

Summary: Certain diseases requiring glucocorticoids are independently associated with an increased risk of fractures. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and neurological diseases are associated with both vertebral and non-vertebral fracture risk, while rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are only associated with non-vertebral fractures.

Summary: This study found no significant changes in the cortisol awakening response (CAR) over the menstrual cycle, and no significant association with variations in estradiol and progesterone. These results suggest that CAR is largely robust against hormonal variations across the menstrual cycle.

Summary: Before menopause, females have a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease than age-matched males, possibly due to the protective effects of sex hormones. 17 beta-E2 inhibits THBS1 expression, preventing cell senescence and apoptosis, and counteracts oxidative stress by suppressing the TGF-beta/Smad signaling pathway.

Summary: This study examined the effects of maternal malnutrition on the transcriptomic landscape of the ventral prostate in rats. It found that changes in molecular pathways related to cellular development and tissue morphogenesis were associated with maternal malnutrition. The Abcg1 gene was found to be deregulated in both malnourished rats and prostate cancer models and patients.

Summary: This study investigated the role of estrogen receptors (ERs) in vitellogenesis (Vtgs) regulation in pompano fish. The findings suggest that E2 may regulate the expression of different subtypes of vtg through ERs, displaying a compensatory expression effect on the regulation of ers and vtgs. This provides a theoretical basis for further research on reproductive endocrinology in pompano fish.

Summary: Endocrine changes during bird reproduction, particularly the relationship between prolactin and incubation behavior, were investigated. The study monitored the physiological status and incubation behavior of Silkie hens over 1-2 years. The results showed that most mature hens exhibited incubation behavior multiple times, and there was a noticeable increase in nest occupancy 7-10 days before incubation onset. Protein analysis revealed that secreted prolactin during the reproductive cycle contains various isoforms, suggesting post-translational modifications like glycosylation and phosphorylation.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of calcitriol, TGF-131, and their combination on human trophoblast cells. The results showed that the combination treatment modified the transcriptional landscape and mainly affected the storage, activity, and metabolism of lipids, which may have an impact on placental development.

Summary: Defects in trophoblastic EMT caused by dysregulation of circTNRC18's interaction with LIN28A play a vital role in the development of preeclampsia. LIN28A overexpression suppresses circTNRC18-mediated inhibition of trophoblast migration, invasion, and EMT, while LIN28A knockdown promotes them. Furthermore, circTNRC18 regulates the intracellular distribution of LIN28A and the expression of insulin-like growth factor II, affecting cell migration and invasion. Targeting the circTNRC18-LIN28A regulatory axis may provide a novel treatment approach for preeclampsia.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on academics, particularly on those with minoritized identities or who were early career, caregivers, or had intersecting identities. The pandemic altered the impact factors of academia, including scholarly products, and affected the way individuals could respond. It is predicted that the pandemic will have long-term impacts on the population dynamics, composition, and landscape of the academic ecosystem. The number of journal submissions decreased, especially among women authors, and the pandemic heavily impacted women authors from Asia and the Middle East.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the role of vitamin D in redox balance, insulin resistance, and its predicting value for subclinical pregnancy toxemia (SPT) in pregnant ewes. The results showed that ewes with insufficient vitamin D had significantly lower total antioxidant capacity (TAC) compared to ewes with sufficient vitamin D, and there were significant differences in metabolite concentrations between the two groups. Additionally, vitamin D was positively correlated with fructosamine, calcium, and TAC, and negatively correlated with non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) and total oxidant status (TOS). Ewes with insufficient vitamin D had a higher risk of developing SPT two weeks prior to lambing and at lambing.

Summary: Depression and cardiovascular disease are influenced by daily life stress, but the biological mechanisms behind this connection are not well understood. This study shows that the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) plays a role in regulating stress responses and behavior, with sex-specific effects. In males, the vmPFC-PH circuitry promotes positive motivation and reduces stress responses, while in females it elevates stress responses. This suggests that cortical regulation of stress reactivity and behavior is mediated by projections to the hypothalamus in a sex-specific manner.

Summary: This study reveals the important role of KDM2B in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). KDM2B affects cellular resistance to oxidative stress by regulating a network of genes and metabolic enzymes, in collaboration with ATF4 and MYC. Additionally, high expression of KDM2B is associated with poor prognosis in patients.
