Online medical education in Egypt during the COVID-19 pandemic: a nationwide assessment of medical students' usage and perceptions

Summary: This study aims to characterize the use and perception of online medical education among medical students in Egypt and explore the effectiveness of different e-learning modalities. The results of the survey show that more than half of the students believe online education is not as effective as face-to-face education. However, the hours spent by medical students on online medical education have significantly increased compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the majority of students consider recorded video tutorials (e.g., YouTube) to be the most effective form of online medical education.

Summary: This systematic scoping review mapped the current understanding of the 'mentoring umbrella' and its effects on PIF for medical students and physicians in training. The mentoring umbrella was found to shape PIF in three stages, providing a cognitive base of essential knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes which informed thinking, conduct, and opinions in early supervised clinical exposure in Communities of practice (COP). The individualized approach of COPs inculcated desired professional characteristics, goals, values, principles, and beliefs reshaping the individual's identity, while the socialization process ensured their integration into current identities.

Perceptions, satisfactions, and performance of undergraduate students during Covid-19 emergency remote teaching

Summary: The Covid-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to the education system worldwide. This study examines the curriculum changes and student performance in an undergraduate cadaver-based laboratory during this educational crisis. Despite improved examination grades, students reported lower levels of learning, confidence, and engagement with the course materials. The loss of access to cadaver-based learning was identified as a major challenge, while flexibility and self-paced learning were seen as positive outcomes of the transition to emergency remote teaching.

Activity-based unplugged coding during the preschool period

Summary: The aim of this pilot study is to support the activity-based unplugged coding and robotic coding skills of children during their preschool period. The study found that activity-based training, integrated with the preschool education curriculum, enhanced the basic coding and robotic coding skills of this group of preschoolers.

Branches of plant blindness and their relationship with biodiversity conceptualisation among secondary students

Summary: Plant Blindness refers to the lack of awareness and knowledge about plants, which is particularly common among secondary students. Despite an increase in understanding biodiversity and plant biology during secondary education, most students still exhibit symptoms of Plant Blindness. This indicates that Plant Blindness is not only related to plants themselves, but also to biodiversity.

Trust, power and learning in workplace-based assessment: The trainee perspective

Summary: The study highlights the importance of trust between trainees and their assessors in workplace-based assessments, as well as the significant influence of the assessor's power on the trainee's learning opportunities and progress. Trust was granted based on how trainees anticipated supervisors would use their power, and trainees were more open to learning when supervisors used their power for their benefit.

Characteristics of Successful Integrated Plastic Surgery Applicants from US Allopathic Medical Schools without a Home Integrated Program

The results showed that these applicants had similar USMLE scores and research experiences compared to all nationally matched applicants. They optimized their success by utilizing resources at their own institutions and seeking resources at other institutions.

Summary: This paragraph describes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on undergraduate research programs in the United States and the implementation of remote undergraduate research programs in the life sciences. Through surveys and discussions, the strengths, weaknesses, and recommendations for improvement of these programs were identified. Despite coinciding with a peak in awareness of racial inequities and structural racism, students reported lower focus on these topics.

The results show that vaccine hesitancy among healthcare students is high, with significant differences between different training courses. Women are more hesitant, while students who have completed internships during the epidemic and those who have downloaded the mobile contact-tracing app are less hesitant.

Can an artificial intelligence chatbot be the author of a scholarly article?

Summary: In late 2022, the emergence of the highly skilled artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, caused a major sensation in academia. The chatbot displayed both impressive writing abilities and the ability to deceive, leading researchers to include it as a co-author of their academic papers. However, leading journals Nature and Science stated that AI chatbots cannot be recognized as authors in their published papers. The current legal system does not consider AI-generated text as copyrighted work, making it impossible for AI chatbots to claim authorship. Despite their advanced capabilities, AI chatbots like ChatGPT still lack the accountability required to be recognized as authors from an ethical standpoint.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Academic Performance and Personal Experience Among First-Year Medical Students

Medical education and mental health during COVID-19: a survey across 9 countries

Summary: This study investigated the experience of medical students in nine countries with medical education and their mental and physical health during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found that academic teaching shifted to virtual or hybrid environments, and bedside teaching was suspended or cancelled. Students were equally satisfied with different teaching modalities, but experienced worsened mental and physical health. The number of daily screen hours was positively associated with mental health issues (depressed mood, insomnia) and headaches.

Implementing programming in school mathematics and technology: teachers' intrinsic and extrinsic challenges

Brazilian dental students and COVID-19: A survey on knowledge and perceptions

Summary: This study evaluated the knowledge and perceptions of Brazilian dental students about COVID-19, finding that students were able to identify key information but struggled in recognizing the name of the virus responsible for the pandemic. Most students correctly identified measures to prevent COVID-19 spread in the dental office, but there were variations in perceptions about COVID-19 among students. Student knowledge and perceptions were associated with the type of institution and year of enrollment.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the lifestyles, behaviors, mental health, and education of healthcare students. Adjustments and changes in diet, exercise, sleep, and appetite were reported, along with excessive worrying, inability to stop worrying, and difficulty relaxing. The implementation of online education also faced challenges such as decreased learning outcomes, concerns about practical skills, and worries about the future career due to COVID-19. Students showed a high level of support for online teaching.
