Summary: This study investigated the performance of three-to-five-year-old children on the how many and give-N tasks. The findings showed that children performed worse on give-N compared to how many, and this performance gap increased as the set size increased, even after controlling for counting skill. Confirmatory factor analyses revealed that each task provided task-specific variance, suggesting different aspects of children's understanding of cardinality.

Summary: Parents vary in the math support they provide, and this is related to their children's math knowledge. Parents' knowledge of early math topics, such as numeracy and repeating patterning, explains some of this variability. Their knowledge of early repeating patterning is related to their beliefs and support in this area, while their knowledge of early numeracy is related to their beliefs but not their support. Education and employment status predict parents' support in numeracy and repeating patterning. These findings have implications for research, theory, and interventions targeted at parents.

Summary: In recent years, many institutions have utilized course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) to engage more students in authentic research. However, there is a lack of research on how to effectively support and foster student motivation in CUREs. Motivation is a crucial factor to consider at the undergraduate level, as low motivation has been linked to lower achievement and decreased interest in STEM degrees and careers. This study used mixed methods and self-determination theory (SDT) to investigate how students' basic psychological needs were either supported or frustrated during CURE activities. The findings indicated that student motivation was potentially diminished during all CURE activities, with autonomy being the least supported aspect. To address these challenges, the authors suggested specific strategies to enhance choice, support competence, improve collaboration, inspire discovery, and create more opportunities for iteration during CUREs.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between humor, motivation, and achievement in mathematics for students with learning disabilities. The results showed that incorporating humor in mathematics instruction can improve motivation and achievement for these students. Students who were taught mathematics with humor scored higher on motivation and mathematics achievement at the end of the school year compared to the beginning. The findings suggest that incorporating humor in mathematics instruction can have a positive impact on this special student population and other educational phenomena such as dropout rates and academic achievements in other subjects.

Summary: The purpose of this case study was to understand the emotions experienced by university teachers during teaching and how these emotions influence their pedagogical competency and development as teachers. Data were collected through interviews with nine university teachers participating in an educational development project. The results showed that the teachers experienced positive, negative, and mixed teaching-related emotions, which influenced their self-perception as teachers and their pedagogical competency. The teachers reflected on their teaching experiences and shared their teaching-related emotions with others. Social reflection can aid in personal evaluation and interpretation of teaching-related emotions and experiences, and higher education institutions should create supportive environments for academic personnel to encourage social reflection and sharing of teaching-related emotions. The educational development project provided a fruitful context for pedagogical development, offering opportunities for joint discussions on pedagogical perspectives.
