Nature dependence and seasonality change perceptions for climate adaptation and mitigation

Moinul Islam, Koji Kotani, Shunsuke Managi

Summary: Global climate change is a scientifically proven phenomenon, but there are discrepancies in how people perceive it. This research examines people's perceptions of seasonal change in relation to their life practices, experiences, and socioeconomic factors. The findings suggest that people's dependence on natural resources in their professions, experiences of natural disasters, and life history in specific locations shape their correct perceptions of climate seasonality.

Economic policy uncertainty and enterprise innovation in China: From the perspective of equity financing and financing structure

Yun Liu, Qun Gao

Summary: This paper discusses the impact of economic policy uncertainty on enterprise innovation from the perspective of equity financing and financing structure, analyzes the transmission mechanism of equity financing between them and the role of financing structure optimization under uncertainty. The findings reveal that economic policy uncertainty promotes enterprise innovation, and the positive effect is even more pronounced in non-state-owned and eastern enterprises, as well as high-tech enterprises. For the transmission mechanism of equity financing, it finds that the scale of equity financing and the cost of equity financing play positive and negative intermediary roles respectively. For the overall financing structure of enterprises, the proportion of equity capital exerts positive mediating and moderating effects on the relationship of economic policy uncertainty and enterprise innovation. The conclusions of this paper provide decision-making reference and theoretical support for enterprises in optimizing financing structure, coping with economic policy uncertainty, and promoting innovation.

Reciprocity in migration policy and labor market integration: A lab experiment

Kerstin Mitterbacher, Juergen Fleiss, Stefan Palan

Summary: This study experimentally examines the reciprocal relationship between economic migrants and citizens of destination countries. The labor market participation of economic migrants is found to be related to the openness of destination countries. The threat of restrictive policies increases migrants' willingness to work, but the actual implementation of such policies reduces this willingness. The study concludes that thoughtful and balanced migration policies are crucial in supporting mutually beneficial co-existence in society.

Heterogeneous effects from integrated farm innovations on welfare in Rwanda

Aimable Nsabimana, Philip Kofi Adom

Summary: Using a multinomial endogenous switching regression model, this study examines the factors influencing farmers' adoption of multiple integrated technologies and the effects of adopting integrated farm technologies on farm yield, farm income, and household food expenditure. The results show that adopting higher-order suites of technologies has higher dividends for farmers in terms of farm yield and income compared to adopting single technologies. Among different integrated technologies, the combination of crop and soil innovations has the greatest impact. Furthermore, the study finds that there are no statistical differences in food expenditure from adopting higher-order packages of technologies, suggesting that the additional gains are diverted towards investing in family assets, child education, and health expenditures. The study also suggests that the level of education of the family head and access to credit significantly influence the decision to adopt multiple integrated technologies. These findings provide suggestive evidence for a policy shift towards improving farm productivity and promoting credit access and education in rural communities.

The effect of perceived risk of false diagnosis on preferences for COVID-19 testing: Evidence from the United States

Tomas Rossetti, Ricardo A. Daziano

Summary: This paper proposes a methodology based on random utility maximization and prospect theory to assess willingness-to-pay for COVID-19 test attributes. The analysis of stated preference data in the United States reveals that individuals tend to underestimate low probabilities and overestimate mid-range probabilities. Additionally, false positive results are found to be more burdensome than false negative outcomes, indicating a degree of willful ignorance. The findings also show a preference for tests with faster turn-around times and less invasive collection methods.

Estimating a Time-Varying Distribution-Led Regime

Paul Carrillo-Maldonado, Michalis Nikiforos

Summary: This paper estimates the distribution-led regime of the US economy using a time varying parameter model. The findings suggest that the US economy became more profit-led in the first postwar decades until the 1970s and has become less profit-led since. In the last fifteen years of the sample, the effect of changes in distribution on economic activity is statistically insignificant.

Measuring exposure to network concentration risk in global supply chains: Volume versus frequency*

Satoshi Inomata, Tesshu Hanaka

Summary: This paper presents new referential statistics for measuring the degree of supply chain exposure to network concentration risk. The authors develop a metric that indicates network concentration based on the frequency of supply chain engagement with regions of concern. Japan and China are selected as target regions for assessment, considering their propensity to encounter natural hazards and mounting geopolitical tension with the United States. Additionally, the study identifies the highly asymmetric structure of mutual economic dependency in US-China relations.

State ownership, political connection, and innovation subsidies in China*

Hong Cheng, Hanbing Fan, Takeo Hoshi, Dezhuang Hu

Summary: This study examines the impact of political connections on the likelihood of Chinese firms receiving innovation subsidies. The findings suggest that politically connected firms are more likely to receive such subsidies, and that this connection is more important than state ownership. While firms receiving innovation subsidies file and receive more patents, these patents are not necessarily of high quality, and there is no increase in productivity or profitability. These results indicate politically induced inefficiency in the allocation of innovation subsidies in China.

Inequality of carbon intensity in the Chinese manufacturing sector: The role of information and communication technology infrastructure

Xiaomeng Zhang, Chu Wei

Summary: China's manufacturing sector accounts for 36% of the nation's total carbon emissions. Managing carbon intensity within the manufacturing sector is crucial for China to achieve its carbon neutrality objectives. This study examines the inequality of carbon intensity within the sector and the impact of information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure on carbon intensity. The results show that carbon intensity inequality has been increasing over the years, with regional differences being the major contributor. Moreover, the study finds that ICT infrastructure hinders the national convergence of carbon intensity, but the effect varies across regions and sectors.

A stock-flow consistent model of inventories, debt financing and investment decisions

Ettore Gallo, Gustavo Pereira Serra

Summary: This paper develops a stock-flow consistent (SFC) model by incorporating inventories, firm's deposits, and debt financing into the investment function. The model investigates the role of investment decisions in shaping economic fluctuations over the business cycle by considering various economic actors. The simulation results indicate that inventory dynamics are significant in economic cycles, affecting the length and timing of fluctuations. Expectations also play a crucial role in economic oscillations and convergence. Inventory investment is found to accommodate rapid changes in aggregate demand.

Can outward FDI promote export diversification for emerging economies? Firm-level evidence from China

Song Zhang, Chunlai Chen, Haoze Li

Summary: Recent studies have emphasized the importance of export diversification in facilitating structural change and economic development in emerging economies. This study empirically investigates whether outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) can promote export diversification. The results show that China's OFDI has a positive and statistically significant impact on promoting China's diversification of export basket, and the promotion effects vary upon different motivations of OFDI. The study also finds that the promotion effects mainly come from optimised organisational structure and improved business performance of the OFDI firms.
