Oral microbiota in human systematic diseases

Xian Peng, Lei Cheng, Yong You, Chengwei Tang, Biao Ren, Yuqing Li, Xin Xu, Xuedong Zhou

Summary: Oral bacteria directly influence dental caries and periodontal diseases, and the dynamic oral microbiota reflects immune and metabolic information and status through communication between the oral cavity and systemic organs. The oral cavity acts as an important interaction window between the human body and the environment, and the microbial composition in different sites is regulated by complex signaling, hosts, and external environmental factors.

Interconnection of periodontal disease and comorbidities: Evidence, mechanisms, and implications

George Hajishengallis

Summary: Periodontitis is linked with various other diseases, potentially with a causal relationship. Interventional studies and preclinical models support the connection between periodontitis and comorbidities, providing mechanistic insights. Advances in understanding the periodontitis-systemic disease connection may lead to innovative therapeutic options for reducing the risk of periodontitis-linked comorbidities.

Osteoporosis and periodontal diseases - An update on their association and mechanistic links

Bo Yu, Cun-Yu Wang

Summary: Periodontitis and osteoporosis are inflammation-associated skeletal disorders prevalent in the aging population. Systemic low bone mineral density is correlated with alveolar bone loss and inflammation plays a critical role in bone remodeling in both conditions. Shared risk factors such as vitamin D deficiency and smoking may mediate the connection between osteoporosis and periodontitis.

Oral health-related quality of life of patients rehabilitated with fixed and removable implant-supported dental prostheses

Summary: Dental implants have become the preferred option for prosthetic rehabilitation, but patient perceptions of oral health-related quality of life do not show overall superiority compared to conventional prosthetics. Patient expectations significantly affect treatment outcomes, and reconstructions supported by implants improve stability and function. However, there are discrepancies between patients' and clinicians' evaluations, especially in esthetic outcomes.

Expert consensus on dental caries management

Lei Cheng, Lu Zhang, Lin Yue, Junqi Ling, Mingwen Fan, Deqin Yang, Zhengwei Huang, Yumei Niu, Jianguo Liu, Jin Zhao, Yanhong Li, Bin Guo, Zhi Chen, Xuedong Zhou

Summary: Dental caries is a chronic oral disease that poses a significant threat to human health. Despite efforts by dentists and researchers, the prevalence of dental caries remains high. Establishing a clinical difficulty assessment system for caries prevention and management based on diagnosis and classification is crucial. Dentists should conduct oral examinations and create dental records during each visit. Personalized treatment plans, based on caries risk assessment and lesion activity, are necessary to restore oral microecological balance, control caries progression, and restore the structure and function of the affected teeth. Follow-up visits should be conducted based on personalized caries management. This expert consensus focuses on caries risk assessment, treatment difficulty assessment, and dental caries treatment plans, which are essential components of caries management throughout the life cycle.
