Summary: This study assessed the measurement of overall oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) construct and its four dimensions using several versions of OHIP, and provided recommendations for their use and scoring. The results showed high correlations between the summary scores of the 5, 14, 19, and 49 item versions, indicating similar measurement of OHRQoL across different versions. Based on the findings, it is recommended to use the 5-item OHIP version for psychometrically sound and practical assessment of OHRQoL.

Present status and future directions-Vital pulp treatment and pulp preservation strategies

Henry F. Duncan

Summary: Therapeutic strategies focused on pulp preservation are important in managing deep caries and exposed pulp in vital teeth. While vital pulp treatments (VPTs) have been used for over a century, recent advancements in regenerative endodontics and biologically based therapies have expanded the indications for VPT to include mature cariously affected teeth and teeth with irreversible pulpitis. However, gaps in scientific knowledge and limited educational dissemination among dentists pose challenges in accurately diagnosing the inflammatory state of the pulp and providing consistent treatment options. This review discusses the current status of VPT, identifies the major problems hindering its clinical acceptance, and offers potential solutions for making VPT a more consistently prescribed evidenced-based treatment in dental practice.

Summary: This clinical study evaluated the influence of tooth location on the accuracy of intraoral scanning. The results showed that allowing further modification of the preexisting intraoral digital scan significantly decreased scanning accuracy, while the tooth location of the rescanned mesh hole did not impact scanning accuracy.

Periodontitis and cardiometabolic disorders: The role of lipopolysaccharide and endotoxemia

Pirkko J. Pussinen, Elisa Kopra, Milla Pietiainen, Markku Lehto, Svetislav Zaric, Susanna Paju, Aino Salminen

Summary: Lipopolysaccharide is a virulence factor of gram-negative bacteria that is crucial for the integrity of the bacterial surface. It activates both innate and adaptive immunity and can trigger inflammation directly or indirectly. Chronic endotoxemia, which is associated with an increased risk of inflammation-driven diseases, particularly cardiometabolic disorders, has been linked to the gut microbiota as the main source. Oral dysbiosis in periodontitis may also contribute to endotoxemia. This suggests that lipopolysaccharide could be a molecular link between periodontal microbiota and cardiometabolic diseases.

Tooth Loss and Nutritional Status in Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

R. Zelig, S. Goldstein, R. Touger-Decker, E. Firestone, A. Golden, Z. Johnson, A. Kaseta, J. Sackey, J. Tomesko, J. S. Parrott

Summary: The study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the association between tooth loss and nutritional status in adults aged 60 and above in developed countries. Findings suggest that older adults with tooth loss are at greater risk of malnutrition than those with functionally adequate dentition. The use of validated tools to assess the risk of malnutrition in this population is crucial for promoting early intervention and referral to optimize nutrition and oral health status.

An update of treatment modalities in children and adolescents with teeth affected by molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH): a systematic review

C. Somani, G. D. Taylor, E. Garot, P. Rouas, N. A. Lygidakis, F. S. L. Wong

Summary: The study systematically reviewed treatment modalities for molar-incisor hypomineralisation in children under 18 years old. Resin-based fissure sealants, preformed metal crowns, direct composite resin restorations and laboratory-made restorations were recommended for affected molars, while specific approaches for management of affected incisors lacked sufficient evidence. Products containing CPP-ACP may be beneficial for hypomineralised teeth.

In-office bleaching with a commercial 40% hydrogen peroxide gel modified to have different pHs: Color change, surface morphology, and penetration of hydrogen peroxide into the pulp chamber

Eric D. Acuna, Sibelli O. Parreiras, Michael W. Favoreto, Gustavo P. Cruz, Anderson Gomes, Christiane P. F. Borges, Alessandro D. Loguercio, Alessandra Reis

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy and impact of using 40% hydrogen peroxide with different pHs for bleaching. The results showed that the bleaching agent with pH 5.1 had the highest diffusion of hydrogen peroxide in the pulp chamber, but there were no significant differences in color change or enamel morphology among the different pH groups. Therefore, it is suggested to use alkaline gels for in-office bleaching to minimize damage to the pulpal tissue.

Fear of COVID-19 in Madrid. Will patients avoid dental care?

Maria Jose Gonzalez-Olmo, Bendicion Delgado-Ramos, Ana Raquel Ortega-Martinez, Martin Romero-Maroto, Maria Carrillo-Diaz

Summary: This research aims to describe the changes in perceived infectability, germ aversion, and fear of COVID-19 in adults in Madrid from the beginning of the pandemic to the lockdown exit phase, and their impact on dental care behavior. The study found that participants had higher scores for infectability and germ aversion after the total lockdown. A significant proportion of participants avoided dental visits due to fear of COVID-19. High levels of perceived infectability and fear of COVID-19 were associated with a greater likelihood of avoiding dental care.
