Chlorhexidine in Dentistry: Pharmacology, Uses, and Adverse Effects

Frank Poppolo Deus, Aviv Ouanounou

Summary: This study reviewed the current uses of chlorhexidine in dentistry and highlighted the most effective protocols that maximize clinical efficacy while minimizing adverse drug reactions. The results showed that chlorhexidine serves various purposes and is primarily used as an adjunct to different treatments. Mouthwash is the preferred medium for preventing gingivitis and maintaining oral hygiene. Chlorhexidine products are commonly used in periodontics and postoral surgical procedures with minimal side effects. The antimicrobial properties of chlorhexidine make it an ideal prophylactic when mechanical debridement is not possible.

Prosthetic failures in dental implant therapy

Irena Sailer, Duygu Karasan, Ana Todorovic, Maria Ligoutsikou, Bjarni Elvar Pjetursson

Summary: Both fixed and removable implant-supported prostheses are effective methods for replacing missing teeth, with high survival rates. However, technical complications can still occur, and comprehensive pre-treatment diagnosis and selection of the appropriate prosthesis are crucial for treatment success.

Summary: The objective of this study was to review the experimental staining procedures performed in in-vitro studies for evaluating color stability of resin-based composites used for direct restorations. The study identified a large variety of staining procedures used in evaluating the color stability of resin-based composites. The findings suggest the need for standardization of staining procedures in order to predict the clinical performance of these materials.

Present status and future directions - irrigants and irrigation methods

Christos Boutsioukis, Maria Teresa Arias-Moliz

Summary: Irrigation is the primary method for cleaning and disinfection of the root canal system, but it faces challenges in eliminating bacteria located in the root canal system's intricate structures. Sodium hypochlorite is the preferred irrigant, and syringe and ultrasonic activation are the most popular irrigation methods. There is no evidence that adjunct irrigation methods can improve treatment outcomes beyond what can be achieved by instrumentation and syringe irrigation. Future research should focus on redefining priorities, investigating the penetration and effects of irrigants, and conducting clinically relevant comparisons.

Frank Schwarz, Soren Jepsen, Karina Obreja, Maria Elisa Galarraga-Vinueza, Ausra Ramanauskaite

Summary: Surgical interventions are often necessary for managing peri-implantitis, with flap surgery improving treatment outcomes. While nonaugmentative therapies aim to resolve inflammation, augmentative approaches also seek to regenerate bone defects and achieve reosseointegration. Limited evidence supports the superiority of augmentative surgical techniques over nonaugmentation methods for peri-implantitis treatment.
