Malay Exiles in Central Thailand Revisiting the cultural geography of Islam in Thailand and the Malay world's northern diasporas

Summary: This article presents provisional findings on the cultural geography of Islam in Thailand and the northern extremities of the Malay world. An analysis of registered mosques in Thailand reveals that 10% are located in Central Thailand, with half of them being part of metropolitan Bangkok and 74% concentrated in its eastern districts along the Saen Saep Canal. The article summarizes the research conducted by Thai studies specialists on the migration of Malays to Central Thailand, central Bangkok, and later to its eastern outskirts, as well as discussions on Siamese practices such as the taking of all slaves (chalei) and labor organization under the sakdina system.
