Victorian Facebooks: Privacy Concerns at William Notman's Studio

Sarah Parsons, Vanessa Nicholas

Summary: This article argues that concerns about privacy in relation to photography existed before the emergence of amateur photography. By citing notations from famed photographer William Notman's records, the article suggests that privacy issues were present in the daily operations of photography studios. The article speculates that these concerns were influenced by the marketing practices of early photography studios and this analysis aims to trace current debates about privacy, photography, and visibility back to the commercial systems developed alongside early photography technologies.

User-driven product development: Designed by, not designed for

Joseph Peters, Adam Bleakney, Annika Sornson, Elizabeth Hsiao-Wecksler, Deana Mcdonagh

Summary: The current state of function and design of accessible assistive technology is lacking, leading to low usability and high abandonment rates by people with disabilities. One contributing factor to these negative outcomes is the lack of user-centered design or user-opinion in the product development process. The Human Performance and Mobility Maker Lab (HPML) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign provides a space where people with disabilities are the primary drivers of innovation and design, following the principle of "Designed by, not designed for." This paper explores various assistive technologies developed in the HPML and offers an empathic framework for other research groups to involve people with disabilities in the development and design of assistive technology.

Pedro Valerio, Salome Sequeira, Vanessa Dias, Gisela Encarnacao, Maria Fatima Araujo

Summary: Micro energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry was used to characterise copper-based objects recovered from the neighbouring roman sites of Moinho do Castelinho and Quinta da Bolacha (Lusitania province) during archaeological works. The study found a diversified metallurgy in these artifacts, with different alloys selected based on their functionality and containing various minor elements. The choice of alloys for everyday objects reflected technological, symbolic, and economic considerations.

Synthesis and characterization of interpenetrating network (IPN) based levan-polyacrylamide hydrogels and their application in conservation of cultural heritage

Rumeysa Ozen Saglam, Semra Unal Yildirim, Faik N. Oktar, Seval Genc, Gizem Erdem, Ebru Toksoy Oner

Summary: In this study, an IPN based enzymatic levan-polyacrylamide hydrogel (EL-PA) was developed and characterized for its structural, morphological, rheological properties and swelling kinetics to underline hydrogel properties and its potential use in paper conservation. The addition of levan also led to changes in the viscoelastic behavior of the hydrogels, with the complex viscosity of EL-PA samples showing pronounced dependence on shear rate. The swelling and the overall surface area of the hydrogels were increased with the addition of levan into the polymer network. Solvent loaded hydrogels were then applied on an artifact, a 19th century book of Namik Kemal, and investigated using FTIR, SEM, XRD and colorimetric analysis. Old adhesive layers were successfully removed, and hydrogels showed good compatibility and ease of application. This study has shown that levan has improved hydrogel properties and levan based systems bear high potential in conservation science.

Friction and Failure in the Secondary Art Classroom: Cultivating Decolonial Transformative Pedagogies of Hope

Clare Stanhope

Summary: This article explores the colonization of women's bodies through the depiction of the female nude, which has created a specific bodily ideal that still influences how we perceive women's bodies today. The author shares their PhD research project, which aimed to decolonize the legacy of the female nude and empower young female artists. Drawing on feminist posthumanism and new materialism research methodologies, the author repositions life drawing as a tool to challenge heteronormative and racialized colonial imaginings of the female body.
