Interpreting a virtual reconstruction from different levels of detail: 3D modeling approaches combined with a phenomenological exploratory study

Joao Paulo Vilela, Ricardo Lopes, Fernando Lima

Summary: Virtual heritage offers new possibilities for education, interpretation, preservation, and management of cultural assets, but more consistent theoretical-practical debates are still needed. This study investigates the influence of different levels of detail (LOD) configurations on the construction and interpretation of three-dimensional models of historic buildings. The experiment findings show that models with higher LODs lead to more comprehensive comments on the architecture, and elements such as the building's surroundings, the humanization of the scenery, and the temporal depth of the 3D models should be considered in the virtual reconstruction process.

Applying shape grammar and BIM for generating the mass modular housing design in ShanLiChenJia village, ZhaoYuan, China

Jiang Wang, Jiandong Zhou, Sheng Zhang

Summary: This paper proposes a method that combines shape grammar with BIM technology for floor plan designs. It uses the example of a mass modular housing project to illustrate how to create plan module libraries. Shape grammar is used to manipulate the graphics and functions of component modules, enriching the combination relationship between them. The size relationship that affects the module form is coded through rule-making and the mapping relationship between the shape graph and module attributes is established. The BIM platform can then establish the module library using Autodesk Revit. Additionally, generative experiments in Revit software confirm the feasibility of shape grammar in generative design and spatial diversity of modular buildings.

The Influence of Traditional Substrates on the Behaviour of Lime Mortars

Katia Soares, Isabel Torres, Ines Flores-Colen, Dora Silveira

Summary: One of the main functions of mortars is to protect walls in-service conditions. However, there are common pathological manifestations associated with mortars that not only affect substrate strength and other properties, but also the comfort and healthiness of buildings users. There has been a growing trend towards rehabilitating existing buildings instead of demolishing them in recent decades, driven by economic, urbanistic, ecological, and sustainability reasons. Lime-based renders were commonly used in traditional buildings, but inappropriate coating solutions have led to anomalies in building walls. It is increasingly important to use coatings that are compatible with traditional substrates. The research presented in this paper aims to assess the behavior of lime mortars applied on traditional substrates and to discuss how substrate properties affect mortar behavior.
