Host defense amyloids: Biosensors of the immune system?

Caitlyn Myers, Gail A. Cornwall

Summary: There is significant evidence that amyloids, highly ordered aggregate structures, play crucial biological roles in various species, including bacteria and humans. Antimicrobial peptides/proteins often form amyloids to carry out host defense functions, indicating their preservation across different organisms. This review focuses on the epididymal amyloid matrix and discusses the common properties of host defense amyloids, including their unique traits as powerful biosensors of the immune system.

Analysis of prognostic factors in patients diagnosed with bladder cancer complicated by hemorrhage treated by drug-eluting bead embolization

Jianyang Peng, Zhicheng Weng, Chunsheng Zhang, Guohui Zhou, Yuanzhen Lin, Damian Kolat, Juan Chipollini, Weida Wu

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the effect and prognostic factors of transcatheter drug-eluting bead (DEB) embolization in patients with advanced bladder cancer. The results showed that most patients achieved complete hemostasis within 5 days after the first intervention, and the total effective rate was 64.1%, with a disease benefit rate of 79.5%. Logistic regression analysis indicated that the type of blood supply in bladder cancer may influence the efficacy of the intervention, and hematuria recurrence was significantly associated with the total number of tumors and the type of blood supply.

Single instillation intravesical chemotherapy after radical nephroureterectomy for upper tract urothelial carcinoma: current evidence and future directions

Justin Refugia, Matvey Tsivian

Summary: Upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is a rare type of urothelial carcinoma, accounting for approximately 5% to 10% of cases. Radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) is currently considered the gold standard treatment for high-grade UTUC. However, despite treatment, bladder recurrence still occurs in 22% to 47% of cases. To decrease bladder recurrences, current guidelines recommend single dose, postoperative intravesical chemotherapy (pIVC) following RNU. Despite level 1 evidence supporting these guidelines, the utilization of pIVC remains low, with barriers to implementation.
