Complete or partial loss of the Y chromosome in an unselected cohort of 865 non-vasectomized, azoospermic men

J. Fedder, C. Fagerberg, M. W. Jorgensen, C. H. Gravholt, A. Berglund, U. B. Knudsen, A. Skakkebaek

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of loss of Y chromosome material within the spectrum ranging from small microdeletions to complete loss of the Y chromosome in azoospermic men. The results showed that Y chromosome loss ranging from small microdeletions to complete loss of the Y chromosome was found in 6.1% of azoospermic men. Partial AZFb microdeletions may give a milder testicular phenotype compared to complete AZFb microdeletions.

Aging of stallion spermatozoa stored in vitro is delayed at 22°C using a 67 mm glucose-10 mm pyruvate-based media

Laura Becerro-Rey, Francisco Eduardo Martin-Cano, Cristina Ortega Ferrusola, Heriberto Rodriguez-Martinez, Gemma Gaitskell-Phillips, Eva da Silva-Alvarez, Antonio Silva-Rodriguez, Maria Cruz Gil, Fernando J. Pena

Summary: This study investigated the effect of adding pyruvate to glucose extender and storing the seminal doses at 22 degrees C instead of the usual 5 degrees C. The results showed that pyruvate-based media with the addition of itaconate at an appropriate concentration could maintain the motility of sperm samples after 96 hours of storage, which is important for commercialization.

Low human sperm motility coexists with sperm nuclear DNA damage and oxidative stress in semen

Kamil Gill, Tomasz Machalowski, Patryk Harasny, Marta Grabowska, Ewa Duchnik, Malgorzata Piasecka

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the distribution and risk of sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) and oxidative stress in semen in asthenozoospermic men. The results showed that asthenozoospermic men had lower basic semen parameters compared to the control and nonasthenozoospermic groups. The prevalence and risk of high levels of DNA damage and oxidative stress were significantly higher in men with poor sperm motility. The risk of sperm DNA damage and oxidative stress in asthenozoospermic men was much higher than that in control subjects and nonasthenozoospermic men.

Understanding seminal plasma in male infertility: emerging markers and their implications

Ashutosh Vashisht, Gagandeep Kaur Gahlay

Summary: Infertility is a significant issue for reproductive-aged individuals, with male factors contributing to over 50% of cases. However, current diagnostic tools underestimate the true prevalence of male infertility. Seminal plasma, the carrier of molecules from male reproductive glands, plays a crucial role in reproduction. Researching molecular targets in seminal plasma is important for understanding and diagnosing male infertility.

In Vitro Coexposure of Silymarin with Lithium Chloride Preserves Human Sperm Quality: A Useful Approach to Reduce Oxidative Damages

Zahra Nasimi, Hamid Reza Momeni, Tahereh Etemadi, Niloufar Darbandi

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of silymarin, a potent antioxidant, on human spermatozoa treated with lithium. The results showed that lithium treatment significantly decreased sperm motility and viability, increased oxidative stress levels, and decreased antioxidant enzyme activity. However, coapplication of silymarin with lithium reversed these adverse effects and protected human sperm against oxidative stress-induced damage.
