Summary: A study found a correlation between cranial vault thickness and the morphology and distribution of diploic channels (DCs). DC branches were absent or small when the thickness was below a certain threshold, but appeared larger when the thickness exceeded the threshold. Different distribution patterns in thin areas were observed between H. neanderthalensis and H. sapiens, which may impact the connection between DCs and middle meningeal vessels.

Summary: The objective of this study was to examine the morphology and histological features of the small and large intestines of the six-banded armadillo (E. sexcinctus). The results showed that the small intestine has three parts and the typical four layers of tubular organs, while the large intestine has similar histological subdivisions as the small intestine but with some specializations.

Summary: Single-cell analysis is a promising field in life sciences, allowing the exploration of fundamental laws of physiological and pathological processes. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a powerful tool capable of non-destructive imaging and quantitative measurement of structural and mechanical properties of single living cells. AFM has been widely used in cancer research, providing unique insights into tumor pathogenesis from a biomechanical perspective.

Summary: Vocal production in birds, especially in songbirds, has been extensively studied. However, non-songbirds have received less attention. This study focuses on the anatomy and vocal repertoire of the ostrich, using dissection and X-ray computed tomography. The findings show consistent syrinx morphology in ostriches throughout ontogeny, and both male and female ostriches are capable of producing long duration tonal calls. Closed-mouth boom calls are unique to males.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of foot anthropometric measurements in predicting the diameter of intramedullary screws for fifth metatarsal fractures, and found an association between the fifth metatarsal intramedullary canal diameter, metatarsal length, and foot dimensions. However, the foot anthropometric measurements had a low predictive value for determining intramedullary screw diameter in fifth metatarsal base fractures.

Summary: Fluorochrome labeling was used to study the spatiotemporal variation of dentin apposition and extension rates during the formation of mandibular first molars in wild boar and domestic pigs. The results showed that dentin apposition rates varied in different zones, while dentin extension rates differed between the two species.

Summary: Adult visual plasticity in the cortex involves strongly increased spontaneous and evoked activity of cells. The authors discuss their pioneering work on plasticity in the visual cortex and propose LTP-like cortical changes as the main driving force for adult visual plasticity. Increasing cortical excitability could be a promising approach for promoting perceptual and motor learning in therapeutic applications.

Summary: HIV/AIDS infection is the most severe public health challenge worldwide, with high mortality among HIV/AIDS immunological nonresponders (HIV/AIDS-INRs). Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has become a mainstay of complementary treatment for HIV/AIDS-INRs due to its advantages in promoting immune reconstitution. This study conducted an epidemiological survey and utilized biological evidence to identify a specific TCM syndrome, Yang deficiency of spleen and kidney (YDSK), in HIV/AIDS-INRs. The differentially expressed proteins associated with YDSK were primarily involved in response to wounding and acute inflammatory response, as well as complement and coagulation cascades. The study confirmed potential biomarkers for YDSK syndrome and laid the foundation for a deeper understanding of TCM syndromes and the development of more effective TCM treatments for HIV/AIDS-INRs.
