Effects of Endoscopic Sinus Surgery on Olfactory Function

L. Stefano Ramirez-Gil, J. J. Ley-Tomas, J. C. Hernaiz-Leonardo, Isam Alobid, Joaquim Mullol, J. C. Ceballos-Cantu

Summary: Endoscopic sinonasal surgical procedures may have an impact on olfaction, requiring proper surgical techniques, gentle tissue handling, and perioperative care for optimizing olfactory function. Surgeons need to discuss objectives and manage patient expectations, with routine olfactory assessments being crucial in surgical work-up and follow-up to prevent decreased olfactory threshold while preserving anatomical structures.

Initiation, response assessment, and switch of antibody therapies in patients with severe asthma - A survey among German specialists

Hendrik Suhling, Dirk Skowasch, Karl-Christian Bergmann, Carlo Muemmler, Roland Buhl, Rainer Ehmann, Eckard Hamelmann, Marco Idzko, Margret Jandl, Christian Schulz, Olaf Schmidt, Christian Taube, Stephanie Korn, Katrin Milger

Summary: This study provides a detailed insight into the current opinions and practice of biologic use in severe asthma in Germany. The survey results show that exacerbations and oral steroid use are the main factors for initiating biologic therapy, and type-2 inflammation biomarkers and comorbidities play a significant role in choosing the initial biologic. The Asthma Control Test is the most commonly used tool for assessing disease control. There is no consensus on thresholds for response of pulmonary function tests, and comorbidities are also important for the decision to switch to another biologic when the initial therapy is not effective enough on comorbidities.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigated the clinical and immunological characteristics of pediatric convalescent COVID-19 patients with post-acute COVID-19 sequelae (PASC). The study found that PASC symptoms include shortness of breath, sensory abnormalities, and smell/taste disturbances. The study also identified higher frequencies of S protein reactive CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in PASC patients, characterized by TNF alpha and IFN gamma production and low functional avidity. These findings may have implications for future therapeutic and prevention strategies.
