Viewpoint: The case for a six-dimensional food security framework

Summary: This article argues for updating the definition of food security to include two additional dimensions proposed by the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition: agency and sustainability. The article also shows that international policy guidance on the right to food already implies these dimensions, making it logical to adopt a six-dimensional framework for food security in policy and scholarly settings.

Digital inclusive finance and rural consumption structure - evidence from Peking University digital inclusive financial index and China household finance survey

Meet the meatless: Demand for new generation plant-based meat alternatives

Summary: This study analyzes the demand relationship between plant-based meat alternatives (PBMA) and meats based on market expenditure data. The results indicate that PBMA complements beef and pork, while substitutes chicken, turkey, and fish. Although the current market demand for PBMA is not comparable to meats, the growth of PBMA sales is significant. This study sheds light on the future of PBMA and the fresh meat sector, providing insights for marketing strategies and policies.

Heterogeneous impacts of information technology adoption on pesticide and fertiliser expenditures: Evidence from wheat farmers in China*

Summary: This study finds that smartphone use has varying impacts on pesticide and fertilizer expenditures, with a larger effect on pesticide expenditures than on fertilizer expenditures. The effects of smartphone use on pesticide and fertilizer expenditures differ across different quantiles, indicating a heterogeneous relationship between smartphone use and agrochemical expenditures.

Has global agricultural trade been resilient under coronavirus (COVID-19)? Findings from an econometric assessment of 2020

Summary: Global agricultural trade remained stable during the COVID-19 pandemic, but was still impacted to some extent. The overall impact of COVID-19 on agricultural trade was estimated to be around 5% to 10%, smaller in magnitude compared to non-agricultural sector trade. Different commodity types were affected differently, with non-food items and high-value agricultural products being most severely impacted, while most food and bulk agricultural commodities were either insignificantly affected or had positive impacts.

Balancing sustainable development with the availability and affordability of nutritious plant-based alternatives and the importance of livestock production for income in low-income countries requires further research.

The impact of COVID-19 on destination visit intention and local food consumption
