Grape seeds are considered rich sources of polyphenolic compounds that show a antioxidant or a antimicrobial effects. The aim of the present work was to investigate the effect of a grape seed extract (GSE) oil two oral anaerobes closely associated with periodontal diseases and its antioxidant action. The antimicrobial activity was determined using the macro dilution broth technique and also tested oil a multi-species biofilm grown on saliva-coated hydroxyapatite discs. The evaluation of antioxidant activity was based on the capacity of a sample to scavenge the ABTS radical cation as compared to a standard anti oxidant (Trolox). GSE had a bacteriostatic effect oil the anaerobes. At a concentration of 2000 mu g/ml, it significantly decreased the formation of biofilm. High TEAC values were registered and this extract exhibited greater antioxidant capacity than vitamins C and E. These findings indicated that GSE Could be Used in oral hygiene for the prevention of periodontitis. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
