The FISHSELECT methodology. tools, and software were developed and used to measure the morphological parameters that determine the ability of cod to penetrate different mesh types, sizes, and openings. The shape of one cross-section at the cod's head was found to explain 97.6% of the mesh penetration results obtained in a laboratory experiment. Design guides predicting the 50% retention length (L50) of different mesh types, sizes, and openings were produced and compared with results from sea trials. Results show that the morphology-based simulations can be used to explain both the within-haul and the between-haul variations previously reported from sea trials. Finally, based on the results obtained, ideas to improve the size selection of cod in towed gear are presented. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
