Taxanes in the management of gynecologic malignancies

The taxanes (paclitaxel and docetaxel) currently play an important role in the managment of cancers of the ovary, uterus and cervix. In each of these gynecologic malignancies, the drugs are routinely employed in combination with a platinum agent, although when delivered as single agents they may provide substantial palliative benefit. It is important to recognize that despite the documented major utility of this class of agents in the treatment of gynecologic cancers, many highly relevant questions remain, including determining optimal drug delivery schedules, the duration of treatment and the role of regional paclitaxel administration.
