Cylindrospermopsin (CYN) is a secondary metabolite produced by several cyanobacteria species. Its potential effect on human health includes liver, kidneys, lungs, spleen and intestine injuries. CYN can be cyto- and genotoxic to a variety of cell types. Occurrence and expansion of species able to synthesize CYN in European water bodies has been recently reported and raised awareness of potential harm to human health. Therefore, surface water of different human use should be monitored for the presence of toxic species of blue-green algae. This paper aims to describe the distribution of CYN producers in Europe and the potential effects of the toxin on human health according to the current state of knowledge. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V.
