A novel electrochemical DNA biosensor has been developed using water-soluble polyhydroxylated fullerenols as 3D matrix platform for probe DNA immobilization. Owing to the multiple merits including the unique spherical 3D nanostructure, rich - OH on the outside surface, and good water-solubility of fullerenol platform, the developed biosensor revealed high probe loading density (2.24 x 10(13) strands cm(-2)) and fast hybridization kinetics. Also, a wide linear range from 1.0 fM to 1.0 nM with a detection limit down to 0.17 fM in target DNA detection was obtained. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
