Bismuth (Bi), antimony (Sb) and Bi1-xSbx alloys were electrodeposited as anodes for Mg-ion batteries. At a 1 C rate, Bi0.88Sb0.12 and Bi showed the best cycling capabilities over 100 cycles while Sb failed to show appreciable capacity. SEM was used to study the changes in morphology as the anodes were electrochemically cycled, and XRD was used to characterize the magnesiation and demagnesiation of a Bi anode. A cyclic voltammogram of the electrochemical magnesiation/demagnesiation of Bi in a Mg(N(SO2CF3)(2))(2)/acetonitrile solution is presented as a proof-of-concept for compatibility of a Bi anode with conventional battery electrolytes.
