Tuff masonry structures represent a large part of the existing cultural heritage in Mediterranean countries and need to be preserved against earthquakes by reversible strengthening systems. Mortar-based composites can give a crucial contribution to this challenge because they have higher bond to masonry and reduce further disadvantages of resin-based composites. In this paper, diagonal compression tests on tuff masonry specimens before and after the application of an inorganic matrix-grid (IMG) composite are discussed. Three IMG system layouts were investigated: single-side strengthening; single-side strengthening with steel fibre-reinforced polymer (SFRP) ties; and double-side strengthening. The increase in shear strength and ductility was assessed and compared to that of similar strengthening systems. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
