The role played by vibrational spectroscopy, in particular infrared absorption spectroscopy and Raman scattering, is reviewed with a focus on its contribution to understanding adsorption mechanisms, specific interactions, and adsorption-induced structural changes in metal organic framework (MOF) materials. Through examination of subtle changes in the vibrational frequencies of both adsorbed gases and frameworks modes, specific interactions and dynamics occurring at the molecular level can be unraveled to an extent that is not possible with adsorption isotherm studies.
