Uptake of Cs+ on poorly crystalline layered manganese oxide (Na birnessite) is reported. Distribution coefficients (K-d) showed significant uptake of Cs+ under acidic (pH 2.4) or basic conditions (pH 10.2). The uptake of Cs+ takes place with release of Na+ into the solution confirming ion exchange. The maximum uptake of Cs+ was 2.0 mmol g(-1) at pH 10.2.
